For most people, spending hours under the blazing desert sun sounds like a nightmare — but for Robert Pattinson, it was strangely “relaxing.”
In a recent interview with IndieWire, the Twilight and The Batman star sat down with his Die My Love co-star Jennifer Lawrence, where he opened up about his surreal experience filming Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming sci-fi epic, Dune: Messiah.
🏜️ “I Did Not Have a Single Functioning Brain Cell”
Recalling the scorching shoot, Pattinson shared that the overwhelming desert heat left him in a kind of meditative state.
“When I was doing Dune, it was so hot in the desert that I just couldn’t question anything,” he said with a laugh. “And it was so relaxing — like my brain actually wasn’t operating. I did not have a single functioning brain cell. And I was just listening to Denis [Villeneuve]: ‘Whatever you want!’”
The actor didn’t reveal details about his character in the film, but reports from The Hollywood Reporter have suggested that Pattinson may be playing the chief villain in the highly anticipated third chapter of the Dune saga.

While Pattinson may have found the experience oddly calming, several of his Dune co-stars have previously described filming in the desert as physically punishing.
Zendaya, who returns as Chani, told W Magazine earlier this year that she actually suffered heatstroke during production of Dune: Part Two in Jordan.
“It was very hot,” she said. “I remember thinking, ‘Oh, man, the bathrooms are so far away.’ I didn’t want to drink too much water because it took 10 minutes to get out of the costumes. One day I didn’t drink enough and got heatstroke. I felt so barfy. I called my mom from the bathroom floor saying, ‘I feel terrible.’ She just said, ‘Did you drink water today?’ and I said no.”
Lesson learned, Zendaya added, with a laugh: “You can’t do that.”
Similarly, Austin Butler, who portrayed the menacing Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in Dune: Part Two, told Entertainment Weekly that his first week on set was “like working inside a microwave.”
“It was 110 degrees and so hot,” he recalled. “I had the bald cap on, and it was between two soundstages that were just these gray boxes of 200-foot walls and sand. There were people passing out from heatstroke. And that was just my first week.”

Following the massive success of Dune: Part Two, director Denis Villeneuve is now deep into production on the franchise’s third installment, Dune: Messiah — adapted from Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel, which continues the story of Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet).
The upcoming film will reportedly explore the darker consequences of Paul’s rise to power and the myth surrounding his “messianic” status.
Returning cast members include Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, and Anya Taylor-Joy, alongside Pattinson’s newly introduced character.
