Paramount is gearing up for a massive future slate, and two of its most lucrative fan-favourite franchises — Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Sonic the Hedgehog — are officially heading back to the big screen in 2028. The studio announced fresh release dates for both projects, signalling a renewed push to strengthen its marquee IP.
New Live-Action ‘TMNT’ Film Arrives in 2028
The studio confirmed that its untitled hybrid live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film will hit theatres on November 17, 2028. The project is produced by Neal H. Moritz, known for the Fast & Furious franchise.
The announcement comes after The Hollywood Reporter revealed last month that Paramount and Skydance were quietly preparing a full franchise reboot, hoping to bring the Turtles back to prominence after the underperformance of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows in 2016.
The beloved property, which began as a gritty indie comic in the 1980s before exploding into a global animated and merchandising phenomenon, has seen numerous reinventions. Paramount is now betting on a hybrid live-action revival to reignite audiences.
New ‘Sonic’ Film Also Lands a 2028 Release
Alongside the Turtles, an untitled Sonic the Hedgehog film is also set for a December 22, 2028 release. While plot details are under wraps, the film hails from Original Film and SEGA Sammy Group, the same team behind the franchise’s three blockbuster hits.
The most recent instalment, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, hit theatres last year with Ben Schwartz returning as Sonic and Jim Carrey playing a dual role. With each film boosting Sonic’s popularity among newer audiences, Paramount seems committed to expanding the universe.
Animated TMNT Sequel Arriving Before the Live-Action Reboot
Before the new hybrid reboot lands, fans will get another animated adventure. Paramount is set to release director Jeff Rowe’s sequel to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem on September 17, 2027.
Produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, 2023’s Mutant Mayhem was praised for its inventive animation style and youthful reimagining of the Turtles.
‘Top Gun’ Returns to Theatres in 2026
As part of the announcement, Paramount revealed that Tony Scott’s 1986 classic Top Gun will return to cinemas on May 13, 2026. With the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022 and a third film in development, the studio is reintroducing the original to a new generation of moviegoers.
Final Words
With a live-action TMNT reboot, a new Sonic film, a major animated sequel and the return of Top Gun, Paramount is leaning heavily on proven blockbusters to power its future lineup. For fans of the turtles, the hedgehog, and high-flying fighter jets, the next few years at the movies just got a lot more exciting.
