Olivia Wilde Recalls Near-Fatal ‘Cowboys & Aliens’ Mishap

Olivia Wilde has shared a frightening memory from the making of Cowboys & Aliens, revealing that a stunt sequence on the 2011 film nearly ended in tragedy. Speaking during an appearance on the “Armchair Expert” podcast, the actress looked back at the intense horseback shoot and explained how one split-second decision by co-star Walton Goggins kept her alive. While audiences only saw an action-packed scene on screen, Wilde says what happened behind the cameras was far more terrifying than anyone realized.

The actress described the incident as one of the scariest moments of her career, saying she still believes Goggins deserves credit for saving her life. The film, directed by Jon Favreau, brought together an impressive cast including Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Sam Rockwell, Paul Dano, Walton Goggins and Wilde herself. Although the movie mixed Western action with science fiction, the danger she experienced had nothing to do with visual effects.

Olivia Wilde Says the Accident Happened in Seconds

According to Wilde, the sequence involved several riders charging across the desert at full speed while dozens of horses followed close behind. She recalled filming alongside Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford as they raced toward the cameras during one of the movie’s large-scale action scenes. Everything appeared to be going smoothly until her horse unexpectedly reacted while clearing a ditch in the desert.

“So sure enough, this horse jumps and bucks me off in the craziest way,” she said. “I fell off. I hit my head and my back, and I was laying [on the ground] but, unfortunately, I was on the other side of this kind of lip of dirt, meaning that all horses behind couldn’t see me. And there was also a lot of dust. I remember having my ear to the ground and I could hear it and it sounded like thunder, like they were coming towards me. And I had the thought — it sounds so dramatic — but I thought, it’ll be quick. It’ll be like, pulverized applesauce. Out.”

The actress explained that after being thrown from the horse, she landed in a dangerous position where the riders behind her had almost no visibility because of the raised dirt and thick clouds of dust. With dozens of horses charging in the same direction, she feared there was no way they would be able to avoid her. Listening to the approaching hooves, Wilde believed the situation was already beyond anyone’s control.

Walton Goggins Reacted Without Hesitation

Wilde said Walton Goggins noticed the accident almost instantly and made a decision that changed everything. Rather than continuing forward with the other riders, he turned his horse sideways directly in front of where she had fallen. His quick thinking forced the oncoming horses to split around them instead of running over her.

“Walt Goggins had seen [me] ahead of him and in a split second thought to turn his horse sideways right in front of me and let everyone kind of bash into him,” Wilde continued. “And he’s a great rider, so he was able to handle that. People split the two sides around us thinking he had just gone insane, but he was protecting my body on the ground. And so I owe him my life. It’s crazy. He’s a real-life hero.”

Horse-related accidents have always been one of the biggest risks on large-scale film productions, especially in Westerns where performers often ride alongside dozens of trained animals during practical action scenes. Modern productions use strict safety protocols, experienced wranglers and stunt coordinators, but unpredictable moments can still happen despite careful planning. Wilde’s story offers a reminder of how quickly things can change during live-action filming.

A Film That Fell Short at the Box Office

Released in July 2011, Cowboys & Aliens arrived with high expectations thanks to its ambitious mix of Western storytelling and alien invasion spectacle. Despite featuring major Hollywood stars and a reported production budget of around $160 million, the film struggled commercially and finished its theatrical run with about $175 million worldwide. While those numbers made it one of the notable box office disappointments of that year, the movie still found appreciation among some critics for its entertaining blend of genres and practical action sequences.

More than a decade after its release, however, Wilde’s latest revelation has shifted attention away from the film’s commercial performance and back to what happened during its production. For the actress, one unforgettable day on set remains tied not to the cameras or the finished movie, but to a co-star whose instinctive reaction prevented what could have become a devastating tragedy.
