HBO is turning one of Italy’s most beautiful coastal locations into Westeros for a night. The first episode of House of the Dragon Season 3 is officially set to premiere at the upcoming Taormina Film Festival, giving fans an early look at the next chapter of the Targaryen war before the series launches globally later in June. The event is already creating huge excitement because the screening will happen inside Taormina’s iconic open-air ancient Greek theatre, with Mount Etna sitting dramatically in the background. Honestly, it sounds like the perfect setting for dragons, betrayals, and another season of chaos.
Several cast members from the HBO fantasy series are expected to attend the Italian premiere, including Steve Toussaint, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, and Phoebe Campbell. The actors play key members of House Velaryon and House Targaryen in the show’s brutal civil war storyline. Their appearance at the Sicilian festival is expected to be one of the biggest television-related events at this year’s edition of the festival.
HBO Brings Westeros To Sicily With Massive Festival Opening
The Italian launch of House of the Dragon Season 3 will officially open the 72nd Taormina Film Festival, which runs from June 10 to June 14. Before arriving in Italy though, the series will first hold its global premiere in London on June 8. HBO clearly seems to be treating the new season as one of its biggest television events of the year, especially after the strong response to the first two seasons.
Festival director Tiziana Rocca described the screening as a major moment for the event and said the festival is proud to host one of the most globally loved modern television franchises. Taormina itself has become increasingly recognizable to international audiences in recent years, especially after serving as a major filming location for The White Lotus Season 2. Now the city is once again preparing for another giant HBO takeover.
The third season of House of the Dragon will officially premiere in the United States on June 21 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max. Italian audiences will get access a day later on June 22 through HBO Max Italy. Like previous seasons, the new chapter will run for eight episodes with weekly releases continuing until the finale in August.
The Targaryen Civil War Is About To Become Even Bloodier
Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon takes place around 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The series focuses on the violent Targaryen family conflict known as the Dance of Dragons, where rival factions inside the same bloodline fight for control of the Iron Throne. Season 2 ended with tensions reaching dangerous new levels, and fans are expecting Season 3 to push the war into even darker territory.
The Taormina Film Festival itself is also shaping up to have a surprisingly strong lineup this year. Legendary filmmaker Jane Campion will serve as jury president, while Helen Mirren is set to receive a lifetime achievement honor during the festival. Russell Crowe is also expected to attend for the world premiere of his upcoming thriller Bear Country, reuniting with director Derrick Borte after Unhinged.
The festival’s full lineup will reportedly be announced on June 4, but HBO has already managed to grab headlines by making House of the Dragon the centerpiece of the opening night. For fantasy fans, watching dragons return under the Sicilian sky might honestly be one of the most cinematic premieres the franchise has ever done.
