Quentin Tarantino has officially confirmed Sacha Baron Cohen as the lead actor in his upcoming West End play, The Popinjay Cavalier, with performance dates and ticket booking details finally announced. The swashbuckling comedy will begin previews at London’s Phoenix Theatre on February 23, 2027, before its official opening on March 18. The production marks Tarantino’s debut as a stage playwright and director, as well as Baron Cohen’s first major West End appearance.
The announcement, made on October 11, also confirms that tickets will go on sale on October 12, with priority booking beginning at 9 AM BST and general sales opening at noon. Performances are currently scheduled through June 13, 2027.
Baron Cohen expressed his excitement about collaborating with the Oscar-winning filmmaker, saying, “When the best director in the world calls, you don’t ask questions.”
What Is Quentin Tarantino’s The Popinjay Cavalier About?
Set in 1830s Europe, The Popinjay Cavalier is described as a comedy involving deception, disguise and romantic adventure. The production draws inspiration from classic Hollywood swashbucklers, particularly the writings of George Bruce, Ernst Vajda and Jesse Lasky Jr.
Unlike Tarantino’s crime-heavy films, the play promises a theatrical adventure influenced by old-fashioned sword-fighting stories, elaborate costumes and heightened comedy.
Sacha Baron Cohen will portray the title character, although further plot details remain undisclosed.
The casting brings together two entertainers known for unconventional humour. Baron Cohen’s work in Borat, Brüno and The Dictator demonstrates his ability to combine outrageous comedy with social satire, while Tarantino’s films frequently blend sharp dialogue, violence and unexpected humour.
Their collaboration could offer an unusual interpretation of the traditional swashbuckling genre, although the production’s precise tone has yet to be revealed.
The Popinjay Cavalier Ticket Prices and Booking Dates
The play is being produced by Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sonia Friedman Productions, with Tarantino directing his own script.
Tickets start at £25, with more than 16,000 seats priced below £50 across the scheduled run. Priority booking opens October 12 at 9 AM BST, followed by general sales at 12 PM BST.
The production’s confirmed dates are February 23 through June 13, 2027, with its official opening night scheduled for March 18.
Additional casting announcements are expected, but the remaining performers have not been revealed.
For Tarantino, The Popinjay Cavalier represents an important creative departure. After establishing himself through films including Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, he is now bringing his distinctive storytelling approach to live theatre.
Whether the production eventually extends beyond London remains unconfirmed. For now, audiences have a confirmed venue, performance schedule and leading actor for one of the West End’s most unusual upcoming collaborations.
