The domestic box office has witnessed two very different success stories over the past year. While Border 2 has emerged as the biggest Indian hit of 2026 so far, its performance still falls short when measured against the benchmark set by Dhurandhar, a film that rewrote box office history last year.
Led by Sunny Deol, Border 2 continues to show solid audience pull, but Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar remains the gold standard when it comes to sustained momentum and long-term collections.
Opening Weekend: Border 2 Starts Strong
Directed by Anurag Singh, Border 2 released on January 23, strategically timed ahead of the Republic Day holiday. The result was an explosive opening weekend.
Between Friday and Sunday, the period war drama collected ₹121 crore domestically, comfortably crossing the ₹100-crore mark within three days.
Interestingly, Dhurandhar — directed by Aditya Dhar — had a comparatively slower opening, earning ₹103 crore in its first three days. At this stage, Border 2 was clearly ahead, enjoying an ₹18 crore lead over the 2025 blockbuster.
Second Weekend: Momentum Shifts in Dhurandhar’s Favour
The real divergence between the two films became evident during their second weekends.
Border 2 earned ₹51 crore over its second weekend:
- Day 8 (Friday): ₹10.75 crore
- Day 9 (Saturday): ₹17.75 crore
- Day 10 (Sunday): ₹22.50 crore
This marked a 57.75% drop from its opening weekend, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.
By contrast, Dhurandhar recorded a remarkable ₹81 crore during its second weekend — a drop of just 21.46%. The film not only outperformed Border 2 by ₹30 crore in the same phase but also achieved the rare feat of earning more in its second week than its opening week.
Week-on-Week Comparison: The Big Difference
After finishing its first week at ₹207.25 crore, Dhurandhar gained momentum during weekdays and closed Week 2 at ₹253.25 crore.
Although Border 2 had a higher opening week total of ₹224.25 crore, its slower growth curve suggests it may not replicate the sustained surge seen in Ranveer Singh’s spy thriller.
Day 10 Total: Where Both Films Stand
At the end of 10 days, Border 2 has collected ₹275.25 crore at the Indian box office. The film has maintained double-digit daily earnings, which is a strong sign for any theatrical release.
However, Dhurandhar was already far ahead at the same point last year, having amassed ₹338.75 crore and crossed the coveted ₹300-crore milestone within 10 days.
What Lies Ahead for Border 2
The real test for Border 2 begins now. Its performance on Day 11 (second Monday) will indicate whether it can stabilise like Dhurandhar did or start tapering off.
Adding to the challenge is fresh competition from Mardaani 3, directed by Abhiraj Minawala. The Rani Mukerji-starrer opened last Friday and collected ₹17.50 crore over its first weekend, cutting into available screens and urban footfall.

Border 2 remains a major commercial success and the top-grossing Indian film of 2026 so far. But when placed alongside Dhurandhar, the contrast in box office behaviour is clear — a strong opening versus unstoppable momentum.
Whether Sunny Deol’s war epic can extend its run toward the ₹400-crore worldwide club now depends on weekday holds, competition management, and audience word-of-mouth in the weeks ahead.
