What was supposed to be a nostalgic comedy reunion on The Great Indian Kapil Show has now turned into one of the most discussed television moments online this week. Veteran comedian Sunil Pal recently appeared on the show alongside internet comic Samay Raina, but instead of light-hearted fun, the segment quickly became uncomfortable for many viewers watching at home. Clips from the episode spread rapidly across social media after Samay repeatedly roasted Sunil during their interaction, leading to divided reactions online.
While a section of viewers enjoyed the sharp banter and called it entertaining comedy, another group felt the jokes crossed a line and made Sunil look visibly awkward on stage. Some users even accused the show of “humiliating” the senior comedian publicly, while others criticised Sunil’s own punchlines as outdated or “cringe.” Now, days after the episode aired, Sunil himself has admitted that he was not mentally prepared for the direction the segment eventually took.
Speaking in a recent interview with Zee Switch, Sunil revealed that he originally believed he had been invited purely for a stand-up performance. According to him, the production team had informed him beforehand that Samay Raina and Ranveer Allahbadia would also be present on the show, but he did not expect a roasting session to unfold. Sunil explained that he had specifically prepared material for a stand-up set and arrived mentally focused on performing comedy in that format.
The comedian admitted he felt caught off guard once the interaction shifted into aggressive roasting. In his words, what he expected from the appearance never actually happened, while something he had not imagined at all suddenly became the center of the segment. Interestingly, Sunil stopped short of calling the experience a betrayal, but his comments clearly suggested disappointment and discomfort about how things unfolded on stage.
The situation becomes even more layered because the reunion between Sunil and Samay already carried existing tension before the episode aired. Their relationship had reportedly soured after the controversy surrounding Samay’s show India’s Got Latent earlier last year. During that controversy, Ranveer Allahbadia faced backlash over remarks involving parents and sex, which triggered outrage online and reportedly led to multiple FIRs being filed. The controversy became so intense that Samay eventually removed the show from YouTube entirely.
At that time, Sunil Pal openly criticised Samay in interviews and even used extremely harsh words against him publicly, reportedly calling him a “terrorist.” Those comments created a major online debate and added personal tension between the comedians. Later, Samay indirectly responded during one of his own comedy specials by taking digs at Sunil’s remarks. So when both comics finally appeared together again on Kapil Sharma’s platform, many viewers already expected awkward energy between them.
What made the episode trend heavily online was the visible contrast between old-school television comedy and newer internet roast culture. Sunil Pal belongs to a generation of comedians shaped by family television formats and traditional stand-up setups, while Samay Raina’s humor comes from livestream culture, dark comedy, and roast-style internet banter. That difference in comedic approach became obvious throughout the interaction and likely explains why audience reactions were so sharply divided afterward.
Meanwhile, Kapil Sharma’s show itself continues remaining one of India’s biggest comedy platforms despite regular online debates around its humor style. The series currently features familiar faces like Sunil Grover, Krushna Abhishek, Kiku Sharda, Navjot Singh Sidhu, and Archana Puran Singh. The show has already completed four seasons, with a fifth season expected later this year.
The larger conversation now isn’t just about one uncomfortable roast segment. It has also reopened discussions about where modern comedy should draw boundaries, especially when generational humor styles collide on mainstream television. Some viewers feel comedians should be prepared for anything in a roast environment, while others believe senior performers deserve clearer communication before being placed into that format unexpectedly.
For now, Sunil Pal’s candid comments have added a more emotional side to the controversy, showing that what audiences viewed as comedy on screen may not have felt entirely comfortable behind the scenes.
