Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming action thriller King has already become one of the most anticipated Indian films of the year, and fresh reports about its music rights have only added to the excitement. Rumours recently claimed that Zee Music had acquired the film’s audio rights for a staggering ₹50 crore, potentially making it one of the biggest music deals in Indian cinema. However, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Managing Director and CEO Punit Goenka has now clarified that while discussions are underway, nothing has been finalized.
Directed by Siddharth Anand, King reunites the filmmaker with Shah Rukh Khan after the blockbuster success of Pathaan. The film is scheduled to arrive during the Christmas holiday season, and expectations are already sky-high thanks to its star-studded cast and large-scale production.
Punit Goenka Says Discussions Are Still Ongoing
Speaking to Variety India, Goenka addressed the reports surrounding the alleged ₹50 crore deal but stopped short of confirming the figure. He emphasized that negotiations are continuing and that no agreement has been signed yet.
“I don’t comment on pricing. We are in dialogue, but nothing has been inked yet. At a macro-level, I think music is one of the most promising industries because music is evergreen, unlike other content which has limited shelf life. I keep telling people that the amount of overflow that Zee Music, in its over seven-year existence, has paid to the producers; collectively, no music company would have paid that kind of overflow. When we earn money, we love to share it,” Goenka said.
His comments suggest that while Zee Music remains interested in securing the film’s soundtrack, the reported agreement has not yet been completed. Music rights have become an increasingly valuable part of major film deals, especially for big-budget productions that are expected to generate long-term streaming and licensing revenue.
Big-Budget Films Continue to Drive Record Music Deals
The speculation surrounding King reflects a growing trend in the Indian film industry, where music rights are commanding record-breaking prices. With streaming platforms and digital music services expanding their audiences, soundtrack libraries have become valuable long-term assets for music labels.
One of the biggest recent examples is Ramayana, whose music is being composed by Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman. Reports have claimed that T-Series secured the audio rights for the two-part epic with an advance reportedly worth ₹75 crore, highlighting just how competitive the market has become for premium film soundtracks.
T-Series has also been linked with several other high-profile acquisitions in recent years, including reported music rights deals for Dhurandhar: The Revenge and Pushpa 2, further demonstrating the increasing commercial importance of film music beyond theatrical releases.
King Brings Together a Powerhouse Creative Team
Beyond the discussion surrounding its music rights, King is attracting attention for its impressive creative lineup. The film marks another collaboration between Shah Rukh Khan and Siddharth Anand after Pathaan emerged as one of Bollywood’s biggest commercial successes. Their reunion has raised expectations that King could become another major box office event during the Christmas season.
The soundtrack is being handled by composer duo Sachin–Jigar, while Anirudh Ravichander has been entrusted with composing the film’s background score and theme music. The combination brings together two of the industry’s most popular musical talents, increasing anticipation for both the songs and the film’s overall sound design.
Produced by Red Chillies Entertainment and Marflix Pictures, King also features an ensemble cast including Suhana Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Deepika Padukone, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Rani Mukerji, Jaideep Ahlawat, Arshad Warsi and Raghav Juyal in pivotal roles.
Although reports of a record-breaking music rights agreement continue to circulate, Goenka’s latest comments make it clear that negotiations are still in progress.
