The legacy of veteran actor and comedian Satish Shah will receive one of India’s highest civilian honours today as he is set to be awarded the Padma Shri posthumously. While the recognition celebrates decades of contributions to Indian cinema and television, it also arrives at a deeply emotional time for his family, who are still coping with the loss of a man remembered as much for his warmth off-screen as for his unforgettable performances on it.
Shah’s absence will be strongly felt at the ceremony taking place at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Instead of the actor receiving the honour himself, his cousin Arvind Mamania will accept the award from President Droupadi Murmu on behalf of the family. For those close to the late actor, the moment represents both pride and heartbreak, as they continue to navigate life without one of the most cherished members of their family.
Family Says Loss Still Feels Unreal
Speaking ahead of the ceremony, Mamania admitted that the family is still struggling to accept Shah’s passing. According to him, daily life continues to carry reminders of the actor’s presence, particularly through his wife Madhu Shah, whose grief remains a constant reminder of the family’s loss.
“We have not yet come to terms with the shock (of his death) Seeing his wife everyday keeps reminding us of the kind of person he was. Our home was filled with laughter and smiles, now all of a sudden the happiness has vanished. It’s a big vacuum. We are looking after her (Madhu Shah, Satish’s wife) she is precious to us too.”
His words reflect the impact Shah had beyond the entertainment industry. Friends, relatives and colleagues have often described him as someone who brought positivity wherever he went. While audiences knew him through his iconic comic timing and memorable characters, family members remember a man who kept everyone around him smiling.
The Padma Shri recognition has therefore become more than an official honour. For many close to Shah, it serves as a reminder of the affection and respect he earned throughout his life and career.
Why His Cousin Will Receive The Honour
Mamania also explained why he was chosen to represent the family at the prestigious ceremony. According to him, Shah’s wife was unable to travel due to health concerns, making it difficult for her to attend the event in person. The responsibility eventually fell to him, something he describes as both an honour and an emotional duty.
“He was more like a brother to me and his wife is unable to travel due to health reasons so she could not be present at the ceremony. We wished the honour would come earlier, when he was alive but nonetheless we cannot change what has happened. My wish is that when I receive the award on his behalf, he watches us from above and blesses us. Once I’m back in Mumbai, we plan to have a small celebration. in his honour”
The statement captures a feeling often shared when artists receive posthumous recognition. While the family is grateful for the acknowledgement, there remains a sense of sadness that Shah is not physically present to witness the appreciation for a career that entertained audiences for decades.
