James Gunn Says DCU Batman Casting Is Not Far Away

James Gunn has offered an important update on the search for the DC Universe’s next Batman, revealing that the casting process is “not very far away.” The DC Studios co-chief also confirmed that he wants an actor who is roughly the same age as David Corenswet’s Superman, suggesting that the new Bruce Wayne will be considerably younger than some previous big-screen versions. Gunn’s comments provide a clearer picture of what DC Studios wants from its next Dark Knight, although the actor’s identity remains unknown.

James Gunn Wants the Best Actor, Not Just a Movie Star

Speaking on The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? The Official Podcast, Gunn addressed speculation surrounding the casting and dismissed suggestions that the studio has already selected its Batman.

He explained that even actors who have appeared in smaller DC roles could remain eligible for the iconic part. Gunn also indicated that he wants to prioritise acting ability rather than simply choosing an established Hollywood name.

“One of the things that excites me about casting Batman is being able to pick a Batman who’s actually the best actor for that role. Superman’s have always been chosen based on who the best actor for that role is. And for some reason, Batman’s are always chosen as movie stars,” Gunn said.

This approach could open the door to performers who are not necessarily major box-office stars but can convincingly portray Bruce Wayne.

Batman Will Be Around Superman’s Age

Gunn also addressed one of the biggest questions surrounding the new Batman: his age. When asked whether the actor needs to be young enough to play the character over the next decade, he agreed that age is an important consideration.

“Roughly, Batman and Superman are around the same age. I don’t think they’re drastically different ages. They’re future best pals, contemporaries,” Gunn explained.

David Corenswet, who plays Superman in the new DCU, is 33. Gunn has not provided an exact age range for Batman, but his comments suggest that DC Studios is looking for an actor from a similar generation.

The Brave and the Bold Will Introduce DCU Batman

The new Batman is expected to headline The Brave and the Bold, a project announced as part of the DCU’s Gods and Monsters chapter. The film is expected to introduce Bruce Wayne’s son Damian Wayne as Robin, bringing another important part of the Bat-family into the shared universe.

This version will remain separate from Robert Pattinson’s Batman in Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise. With casting approaching, the next major update will likely reveal who gets the opportunity to join Corenswet’s Superman in the new DC Universe.
