Russell Brand Trial: Prosecutors Call Him ‘Ruthless’

Russell Brand was described as a “ruthless, calculated and manipulative” sexual predator as prosecutors presented their opening statement at his rape and sexual assault trial in London on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.

The 51-year-old comedian and actor faces seven criminal charges involving six women, relating to alleged incidents between 1999 and 2009. Brand has pleaded not guilty to all charges and denies any non-consensual sexual activity.

Speaking at Southwark Crown Court, prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones KC alleged that Brand used his charm, humour and growing celebrity status to pursue women, regardless of whether they welcomed his advances.

What Did Prosecutors Say About Russell Brand?

Karmy-Jones told jurors that Brand allegedly displayed an “indiscriminate and voracious” desire for sexual contact.

According to the prosecution, some women explicitly rejected his advances, while others had little opportunity to respond. The alleged incidents occurred in several locations, including hotel rooms, workplaces, a bar and Brand’s residence.

The prosecutor argued that Brand could appear charming and likeable when it suited him but allegedly became demanding and manipulative when pursuing sexual encounters.

The seven charges comprise three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of indecent assault.

How Did the Allegations Reach Court?

The alleged incidents span a decade during which Brand progressed from performing stand-up comedy to becoming a television presenter and Hollywood actor.

He subsequently appeared in films including Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Get Him to the Greek and Arthur.

The criminal investigation followed a 2023 joint media investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches, which brought allegations against Brand into public attention.

Several women subsequently approached authorities, leading to the criminal proceedings now being heard in London.

Russell Brand Denies the Allegations

Brand has consistently denied the accusations, maintaining that he never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity.

Arriving at court on Wednesday, he acknowledged feeling concerned about the proceedings but expressed hope that the trial would produce a positive outcome for everyone involved.

The prosecution’s opening statement represents its account of the allegations, not findings of guilt. Jurors will now hear testimony and examine evidence before reaching any verdict.

The trial is expected to continue for several weeks, with the defence having an opportunity to challenge the prosecution’s case.
