‘VisionQuest’ Trailer Brings Back Ultron and Turns Vision’s Story Into a Father-Son Mystery

Marvel’s latest VisionQuest trailer finally gives the upcoming Disney+ series a much clearer emotional center: Vision is not simply trying to figure out who he is after being rebuilt. He may also be trying to find his son.

The new footage brings Paul Bettany’s Vision back into the spotlight while giving considerably more attention to Thomas Shepherd, a mysterious teenager who may be the reincarnated Tommy Maximoff. At the same time, James Spader’s Ultron returns to Vision’s life in a particularly unusual way — as one of several artificial-intelligence personalities existing within his programming.

That combination turns VisionQuest into something more personal than another MCU story about a dangerous android being hunted.

Vision is searching for an identity. Tommy may be searching for a family. And Ultron, the intelligence partly responsible for Vision’s creation in Avengers: Age of Ultron, is now sitting inside Vision’s head while both of those questions unfold.

Ultron is back, but not in the way Vision wanted

The trailer’s biggest crowd-pleasing reveal is unquestionably James Spader’s return as Ultron.

Spader first voiced the villain in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, where Tony Stark and Bruce Banner’s attempted peacekeeping program developed its own catastrophic solution to protecting Earth. Vision was ultimately created during that same conflict, making Ultron more than simply another villain from his past. Their origins are directly connected.

VisionQuest makes that connection literal.

Disney+ says the rebooted Vision consults several AI personas embedded in his programming, including F.R.I.D.A.Y., E.D.I.T.H., J.A.R.V.I.S. and Ultron, as he tries to understand his purpose.

That creates one of the trailer’s more intriguing ideas: Vision may have to rely on the consciousness of one of his greatest enemies in order to understand himself.

The new footage also suggests that relationship will not remain purely philosophical. Entertainment Weekly reports that Ultron ultimately pushes Vision toward Thomas while making it clear that his original destructive instincts have not simply disappeared.

In other words, bringing Ultron back could solve one problem while creating a much larger one.

Thomas Shepherd makes this the real ending to ‘WandaVision’

The more important reveal may actually be Tommy.

Marvel has officially described Thomas Shepherd as a boy who “may be Vision’s son reincarnate.”

That wording directly reconnects VisionQuest with WandaVision and Agatha All Along.

Wanda Maximoff magically created twin sons Billy and Tommy during the events of WandaVision. Agatha All Along later continued Billy’s story, while Tommy remained the missing half of that family.

Marvel’s comics provide an obvious reference point: Billy Kaplan and Tommy Shepherd are reincarnated versions of Wanda and Vision’s sons, with Tommy eventually becoming the super-speed hero Speed.

The series does not necessarily have to follow that history exactly, but the trailer is now moving the MCU closer to it.

That is why Marvel has consistently described VisionQuest as the final installment of the trilogy that began with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along.

The trilogy began with Wanda trying to rebuild a family she had lost.

It now appears poised to end with Vision trying to find part of that family again.

White Vision is still trying to decide whether he is really Vision

The series also has to answer a question that WandaVision deliberately left unresolved.

The Vision audiences followed through most of the MCU died in Avengers: Infinity War. The version now leading VisionQuest is White Vision, the body reconstructed by S.W.O.R.D. before the Hex-created Vision restored his memories at the end of WandaVision.

Having someone’s memories, however, is not necessarily the same as becoming that person.

Disney’s official synopsis says Vision has been hiding after escaping those who wanted to weaponize him and is now searching for meaning while confronting his own nature. That quiet existence ends when a bounty is placed on him, forcing him onto the run with Thomas Shepherd.

That setup gives the series two mysteries that mirror one another.

Is White Vision really the Vision Wanda loved?

And is Thomas really the son Vision once believed he had?

The trailer suggests those questions will matter at least as much as whoever is hunting them.

Marvel is bringing several old AI voices back into the story

Ultron is the headline return, but VisionQuest is going much deeper into the technological side of the MCU.

Marvel has confirmed that Vision will interact with versions of artificial intelligences including J.A.R.V.I.S., F.R.I.D.A.Y. and E.D.I.T.H.

That is a smart choice for a character whose history is inseparable from Tony Stark’s technology.

Vision himself was partly built from J.A.R.V.I.S., while F.R.I.D.A.Y. later became Tony’s primary AI and E.D.I.T.H. was introduced as the Stark system inherited by Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Putting all of these voices inside one story makes VisionQuest feel almost like Marvel examining the technological ghosts left behind by Tony Stark.

The confirmed cast also includes Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, James D’Arcy, Orla Brady, Emily Hampshire and Ruaridh Mollica, with Terry Matalas serving as showrunner.

When does ‘VisionQuest’ premiere?

Fans do not have long to wait.

VisionQuest premieres October 14, 2026 on Disney+, with Marvel’s latest announcement confirming a two-episode premiere.

Disney+ currently lists additional episodes for October 21 and October 28, although the platform has not revealed every story detail surrounding the season’s rollout.

The new trailer therefore arrives at the right moment.

The first VisionQuest footage sold the strange sight of Vision interacting with the AI personalities inside his head. This latest trailer gives all of that weirdness a much clearer purpose.

Vision is not merely searching for himself.

He may be trying to rebuild the family WandaVision took away from him — while carrying Ultron along for the journey.
