Karan Johar is preparing to pour his last cup of Koffee. The filmmaker has confirmed that Koffee With Karan Season 9 will be the celebrity talk show’s final season, bringing a 22-year run to an end when the show returns on JioHotstar on October 14, 2026.
This is not simply a break between seasons. Johar has explicitly described Season 9 as his last, explaining that ending the show is tied to what he wants from the next phase of his career. After spending more than two decades moving between filmmaking, producing and television, he now wants to devote more of his time to directing movies and telling stories on the big screen.
“The decision is emotional and personal to me,” Johar said while discussing the farewell.

That reason gives the ending a little more weight than the usual cancellation or streaming-platform reshuffle.
Johar told Variety that Koffee With Karan has become a major part of his identity within the entertainment industry, but he wants the next decade of his life to include more directing. He described ending the show as a decision made “with a heavy heart.”
It is an interesting shift for a filmmaker whose public persona has, at times, become almost as closely associated with the talk-show couch as with his films. Over nine seasons, Koffee With Karan developed into more than a promotional stop for actors. Celebrity relationships, feuds, dating rumors, rapid-fire answers and unexpected admissions regularly escaped the episode itself and became entertainment news for days afterward.
Season 9 therefore closes not just a long-running show, but one of Bollywood’s most durable celebrity-interview formats.
The show began shortly before Karan Johar lost his father
The timing of the farewell also connects back to one of the most personal parts of the show’s history.
Johar recalled that in June 2004 he told his father, veteran producer Yash Johar, that he wanted to host an informal talk show built around conversations with celebrities. His father died later that month, on June 26, 2004. The first episode was subsequently filmed that August.
Koffee With Karan eventually premiered in 2004 with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol as the first guests. Across its first eight seasons, the series accumulated 161 episodes, moving from Star World into the streaming era and eventually becoming a JioHotstar property.
That 22-year span also means the show documented several generations of Hindi-film celebrity culture. Actors who appeared early in their careers later returned as established stars, while friendships, romances and professional relationships discussed on the couch often changed dramatically between seasons.
Season 9 is a farewell, not just another comeback
Johar has previously taken extended gaps between seasons, so another return might normally have seemed possible. This time, however, the language is unusually definitive.
In his announcement, Johar called the upcoming installment his “very last season,” while the promotional campaign has framed Season 9 around one final cup of Koffee.
What has not yet been fully confirmed is the complete guest lineup. Several celebrity names are already circulating in reports, but until JioHotstar or Johar announces them directly, those lists should be treated as tentative rather than final.
For now, the confirmed date matters more: Koffee With Karan Season 9 begins streaming October 14 on JioHotstar. After 22 years of candid conversations, controversies and celebrity pairings, Johar is closing the format so closely associated with him to make more room for the job that first made him famous — directing movies.
