Robert Pattinson understands why fans want to see his Batman standing beside David Corenswet’s Superman. He is considerably less convinced that this particular Bruce Wayne belongs there.
While promoting Primetime with Skyler Gisondo—who plays Jimmy Olsen in James Gunn’s DC Universe—Pattinson was asked about the possibility of taking Matt Reeves’ Dark Knight beyond his self-contained Gotham and into the larger DCU.
His answer was cautious.
“I think it would be kind of tough to have this version of Bruce outside of that world.”
Pattinson told LADbible that Reeves’ Batman movies have such a specific style and atmosphere that playing Bruce affects him beyond simply putting on the suit.
Pattinson’s problem is the world, not Superman
Interestingly, Pattinson did not argue that Batman and Superman should never share the screen.
His concern is more specific: would this Batman still feel like the same character once he leaves Matt Reeves’ Gotham?
Reeves built The Batman around rain, darkness, crime scenes and a Bruce Wayne who feels closer to a damaged detective than the experienced superhero usually seen in Justice League stories. Pattinson said spending months filming inside that environment can affect his mood, describing the production as an unusually immersive experience.
He even joked that if his Batman encountered lighter DC characters, he would simply make everyone around him more serious.
That gets to the real issue behind the crossover debate.
James Gunn’s DCU already contains aliens, metahumans and a much wider superhero society. Reeves’ Gotham was deliberately built to make something as relatively grounded as the Riddler feel terrifying.
Putting those worlds together would not be impossible. But it would require either expanding Reeves’ universe dramatically or changing the context around Pattinson’s Batman.
DC originally planned two separate Batmen
That separation was intentional from the beginning of Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios era.
When the pair unveiled their DC slate in 2023, Gunn announced The Brave and the Bold as the movie that would introduce the DCU’s Batman, specifically saying at the time that the character would not be Pattinson’s version. The project is designed around Bruce Wayne discovering that he has a son, Damian Wayne, who becomes Robin.
Meanwhile, Reeves’ Batman movies were allowed to continue separately.
There has occasionally been speculation about merging the two, and Reeves said in early 2025 that any such move would depend on whether it made sense creatively. But there has been no announcement that Pattinson has become the DCU Batman.
Pattinson’s latest comments sound much closer to an explanation of why keeping them separate works than a hint that a crossover is being prepared.
The Batman Part II is already pushing Bruce somewhere new
Pattinson is currently filming The Batman: Part II in London, with Matt Reeves returning to direct.
The sequel is scheduled for February 18, 2028, and its cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch alongside returning players.
Pattinson has already teased that the sequel will not simply repeat the first movie, calling it a major change in direction while retaining the atmosphere Reeves established.
That may ultimately be more interesting than immediately connecting him to Superman.
Reeves still has room to expand what Pattinson’s Batman can be inside his own world before DC needs to answer whether he could ever function outside it.
For now, there are effectively two different Batman ideas developing at DC: Pattinson’s intensely contained detective story and the larger DCU version intended for The Brave and the Bold.
Pattinson does not seem to be saying a crossover could never happen.
He is saying that if it does, simply dropping his Bruce Wayne into another superhero movie probably would not be enough. The world around him would have to change without losing what made this Batman distinctive in the first place.
