After years of speculation, production delays and endless rumors, Mahershala Ali has finally shared his perspective on Marvel Studios’ long-troubled Blade reboot. The Oscar-winning actor, who was announced as the MCU’s new Blade during San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, believes the project ultimately failed for one simple reason — Marvel never truly moved forward with it. His candid remarks come after Marvel Studios recently confirmed that the reboot is no longer in active development.
Ali had already been introduced to Marvel fans as Blade through a brief voice cameo in the post-credits scene of Eternals, leading many to believe his standalone film was only a matter of time. Instead, the project spent years changing writers and directors without ever reaching production, becoming one of the most delayed films in Marvel Studios’ history.
“If They Wanted to Do It, We Would’ve Done It”
While promoting his upcoming film Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, Ali reflected on how the collapse of Blade unexpectedly opened the door for another creative opportunity. The new project reunites him with filmmaker Bassam Tariq, who was originally attached to direct Marvel’s Blade before leaving the superhero film during pre-production.
Explaining how everything unfolded, Ali said, “When I look at this and Blade, I couldn’t have done both, and the reason this even exists is because that project fell apart and Bassam had the time, space, energy, and focus to go and write this and then re-approach me. And I was able to use those skills that I had been working on for over a year training for Blade. In that way, I feel creatively redeemed on some level, just in my own journey between me, myself, and I.”
Although he expressed gratitude for where his career has taken him, Ali also admitted he has accepted that Blade is no longer part of his future. “When I look at what is for me, is it was either this or that — and I’ll take this. No offense to them. I’ve been doing this professionally for pushing 30 years now, and one thing I’ve learned is that what is for you is for you and what is not is not. For whatever reason, that project is not for me. If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it. So I have to move on, and I have moved on. Again, you had me under contract, they have billions of dollars, if they wanted to do the movie, we would’ve done the movie. So we’re not doing the movie.”
The statement marks Ali’s clearest public acknowledgment that the long-awaited reboot is effectively over. While Marvel has never officially announced the film’s cancellation, the actor’s comments strongly suggest both sides have now accepted that it will not happen.
Kevin Feige Previously Explained Why Blade Stalled
Ali’s remarks arrive only weeks after Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige addressed the troubled project during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Feige admitted the studio struggled to develop a version of Blade that met its creative expectations and said the filmmakers ultimately decided against moving forward with a script they didn’t fully believe in.
Feige said, “I am feeling like a gigantic loser and failure that we didn’t get off the ground with Mahershala. We didn’t want to simply just put a leather outfit on him and have him start killing vampires. It had to be unique. It fell into the time when we started pulling back and saying, ‘Only accept insanely great.’ And it wasn’t ‘insanely great’ at the time. We didn’t feel like, as we often do, you can have a good script and make it a great script through production. We didn’t feel confident that we could do that on Blade, and we didn’t want to do that to Mahershala and didn’t want to do that to us.”
The reboot experienced multiple creative setbacks after its announcement. Bassam Tariq was initially hired to direct before departing the project, with Yann Demange later stepping in. Over the following years, the film underwent several script revisions and release date changes, but cameras never rolled. By 2025, industry reports suggested the project had quietly been shelved, and Feige’s recent comments largely confirmed that Marvel had decided not to proceed.
Blade’s Future in the MCU Remains Uncertain
Blade remains one of Marvel’s most recognizable supernatural heroes, first reaching cinemas in 1998 through Wesley Snipes’ acclaimed film. Its commercial success led to sequels in 2002 and 2004, helping establish superhero movies as a viable genre years before the Marvel Cinematic Universe began. Snipes even returned to the role in a surprise appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine, reminding audiences of the character’s lasting popularity.
Whether Marvel eventually revives Blade with a different creative team or introduces the vampire hunter through another project remains unknown. For now, however, Mahershala Ali appears ready to leave the long-running saga behind and focus on new opportunities. After nearly six years of uncertainty, his latest comments provide the strongest indication yet that one of Marvel’s most anticipated reboots has officially reached the end of the road.
