Illumination is adding another original project to its growing animation slate, and this time it is bringing together two of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez have officially signed on to headline Not Alone, a new animated adventure centered around aliens, rockets, and an unlikely friendship that could determine the fate of an entire interplanetary journey.
The announcement was made during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, one of the industry’s biggest showcases for upcoming animated projects. While Illumination is best known for blockbuster franchises like Despicable Me, Minions, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Not Alone represents a fresh standalone story built around original characters. The project also marks a notable milestone for Chalamet, who will be stepping into animation voice acting for the first time in his career.
Timothée Chalamet and Selena Gomez Lead the Adventure
According to details revealed by the studio, Chalamet will voice Joe, a reserved rocket mechanic who prefers living a quiet and isolated life. His routine is disrupted when he crosses paths with Fran, a gifted astro-botanist voiced by Selena Gomez. Fran is working on a groundbreaking invention, a plant-powered rocket that could completely change space travel within the film’s universe.
The story begins when Joe and Fran are brought together to help prepare for the rocket’s historic first launch. While there is an immediate connection between the two characters, romance doesn’t exactly come naturally to either of them. That awkward chemistry appears to be one of the emotional anchors of the film, blending relationship comedy with a larger science-fiction storyline.
Things become significantly more complicated when three tiny extraterrestrials unexpectedly enter Joe’s life. The aliens, named Dunk, Welly, and Shirm, are not ordinary visitors. They are fugitives trying to evade capture while searching for a way back to their home planet. Their arrival turns what was already a challenging mission into something much bigger and far more chaotic.
A Star-Studded Supporting Cast Joins the Film
Illumination has assembled a strong supporting lineup around its two leads. Dunk, Welly, and Shirm will be voiced by Rob Brydon, Diane Morgan, and Jamie Demetriou, three performers known for their distinct comedic styles. Their involvement suggests the film will lean heavily into humor alongside its science-fiction elements.
Meanwhile, Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein has been cast as Officer Zandro, the determined but somewhat ineffective law enforcement officer pursuing the runaway aliens across the galaxy. The character appears positioned as both an antagonist and a source of comedy, a combination that has become a familiar ingredient in many successful family-friendly animated films.
The supporting cast also includes Allison Janney and Lamorne Morris. Both actors have extensive experience balancing comedy and heartfelt storytelling, making them natural additions to a project that appears to blend adventure, humor, and emotional character moments.
While Illumination has not revealed additional story details, the early synopsis hints at a film that combines romance, family entertainment, and classic alien adventure tropes. That formula has worked well for animated features in the past, especially when paired with strong voice performances and memorable characters.
Illumination Continues Expanding Beyond Minions
The project arrives during a particularly busy period for Illumination. The studio recently premiered Minions & Monsters at the Annecy festival, where the film generated positive reactions from critics and audiences. Following years of relying heavily on the Despicable Me and Minions franchises, Illumination appears increasingly interested in developing new original stories alongside its established brands.
Behind the scenes, Not Alone is being guided by a team of experienced Illumination veterans. The film will be co-directed by Eric Guillon, Claire Dodgson, and Jonathan Del Val, all of whom have contributed to some of the studio’s most successful productions. Their combined experience spans the Despicable Me series, The Lorax, The Secret Life of Pets franchise, and multiple Minions projects.
The film is being produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri, one of the most influential figures in modern animation. Executive producers Joy Poirel, Richard Curtis, and David Distenfeld are also attached to the project, giving the production an experienced creative team both in front of and behind the microphone.
For Chalamet and Gomez, Not Alone adds another major title to already busy careers. Chalamet continues to balance prestige dramas with large-scale studio projects, while Gomez has expanded her portfolio across acting, music, and producing. Their pairing alone is likely to generate significant interest among younger audiences and longtime fans alike.
Not Alone is scheduled to arrive in theaters on April 16, 2027. With an original sci-fi premise, a high-profile cast, and one of animation’s most successful studios behind it, the film is already shaping up to be one of the more closely watched animated releases on the calendar.
