A fresh controversy has landed just days before the release of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, and this one could have major consequences for the film’s makers. Producer Vashu Bhagnani and his banner Puja Entertainment have reportedly approached the Bombay High Court with a massive Rs 400 crore lawsuit against Tips Industries, Ramesh Taurani, Kumar Taurani, and filmmaker David Dhawan over the alleged use of songs from the 1999 blockbuster Biwi No 1.
The legal dispute centers around the popular tracks Chunari Chunari and Ishq Sona Hai, songs that remain fan favorites even decades after their release. According to reports, Puja Entertainment claims these songs and related intellectual property have been used in Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai without obtaining proper authorization. The production house has argued that the original audio-visual works belong to them and that any commercial use requires valid rights and permissions.
Court Battle Intensifies Ahead of Release
With the Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur, and Pooja Hegde starrer set to hit cinemas on June 5, 2026, the timing of the lawsuit has created fresh uncertainty around the project. Puja Entertainment has reportedly sought urgent interim relief from the court and requested an immediate halt to the film’s release, distribution, streaming, exhibition, and promotional activities that involve the disputed songs.
The company is also seeking removal of Chunari Chunari and Ishq Sona Hai from the film and all promotional material. In a surprising move, the production house has additionally demanded that the makers alter the film’s title, arguing that it is connected to the allegedly infringing content and branding. The legal filing further warns of an additional Rs 100 crore claim if the disputed material continues to be commercially exploited despite objections.
The matter has already attracted attention across the film industry because both songs played a significant role in the popularity of Biwi No 1, one of the biggest Bollywood successes of the late 1990s. The outcome of the case could also influence how classic Bollywood music and legacy intellectual property are handled in future projects.
Film Receives CBFC Clearance Despite Legal Trouble
While the legal proceedings move forward, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai has crossed an important release hurdle. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has reportedly granted the film a U/A certificate after reviewing the final cut. The approved runtime stands at 2 hours and 16 minutes.
Directed by David Dhawan, the comedy entertainer marks another collaboration between the filmmaker and his son Varun Dhawan, a combination that has delivered several commercial successes in the past. However, this latest legal challenge has suddenly shifted attention away from the film’s release campaign and toward the courtroom.
For now, all eyes are on the Bombay High Court, which is expected to hear the matter soon. The decision could determine whether the film reaches theatres as planned or faces last-minute changes before release.
