More than three decades after Clueless became one of Hollywood’s most beloved teen comedies, Alicia Silverstone is officially returning as Cher Horowitz. The long-awaited sequel series has found a new home at Paramount+, giving the iconic character a fresh chapter after the project previously stalled elsewhere. The streaming service has now committed to bringing the series into production, marking a major step forward for the revival.
The announcement is welcome news for longtime fans who feared the project had quietly come to an end. Instead, Cher’s story is set to continue in a completely new phase of her life, shifting the focus from high school drama to the challenges of raising a teenager.
Paramount+ rescues the Clueless revival
The sequel series was initially being developed at Peacock, where it was first announced in early 2025. However, the project was dropped by the platform earlier this year, leaving its future uncertain. Paramount+ has now stepped in and officially ordered six episodes, with production expected to begin in Los Angeles in 2027.
According to industry sources, the production has already submitted paperwork to the California Film Commission in an effort to secure state tax incentives for filming in California. Keeping production in Los Angeles also reflects the original film’s strong connection to Beverly Hills, which played a major role in defining its identity.
The move also keeps the franchise within the Paramount family. Since the 1995 film was released by Paramount Pictures, the sequel will now be produced entirely by CBS Studios, unlike its earlier version at Peacock, which involved Universal Television as a co-producing partner.
Cher Horowitz returns with a new challenge
Rather than revisiting Cher’s teenage years, the upcoming series brings the story into the present day. According to the official synopsis, the once-fashionable Beverly Hills high school student has built a successful career and become a mother. However, parenting proves to be a challenge she never expected.
The official logline states, “Beloved Beverly Hills icon Cher Horowitz (Silverstone) has figured out a lot: She’s successful in business and has mastered motherhood—that is, until her daughter’s high school years, and Cher finds that parenting a teenager makes her feel ‘clueless’ all over again.”
The creative team behind the revival includes Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage, and Jordan Weiss, who are writing and executive producing the series. Silverstone also serves as an executive producer alongside Amy Heckerling, who wrote and directed the original film, and producer Robert Lawrence.

A beloved classic returns for a new generation
Released in 1995, Clueless became one of the defining teen comedies of its era. Loosely inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma, the film followed the wealthy and well-meaning Cher Horowitz as she navigated friendships, romance and high school life in Beverly Hills. Alongside Alicia Silverstone, the cast featured Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Brittany Murphy, Donald Faison, Elisa Donovan, Breckin Meyer, and Dan Hedaya.
The franchise previously expanded with a television adaptation that aired from 1996 to 1999, starring Rachel Blanchard as Cher. More recently, the original film received another honour when it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, recognising its lasting cultural significance.
Paramount+ has also been expanding its lineup of female-focused originals following the Paramount-Skydance merger, making Clueless a natural addition to its growing slate. With Alicia Silverstone stepping back into one of her most iconic roles, the revival aims to introduce Cher Horowitz to a new generation while giving longtime fans the chance to see how the character has evolved after more than 30 years.
