Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused after director Matt Reeves stepped away to deal with a family matter, Warner Bros. and DC Studios have confirmed. The unexpected interruption comes nearly four months after cameras finally began rolling on Robert Pattinson’s long-awaited return as Batman.
The studios are not disclosing any additional details about Reeves’ personal situation, and there is no indication that he has permanently left the movie.
In a joint statement, Warner Bros. and DC Studios said: “Production on ‘The Batman Part II’ has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter. Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.”
That wording is important. This is officially a temporary production pause, not another creative overhaul or Reeves’ departure from the project.
Batman 2 had finally started filming in June
The timing makes the interruption particularly frustrating for audiences because The Batman Part II had only recently moved beyond years of development and scheduling delays.
Reeves announced the first day of principal photography on June 12, 2026, sharing an image of the film’s slate from London with the message “#FirstShot #TheBatmanPart2.” Production later moved into Glasgow, where parts of the Scottish city were transformed into Gotham and road closures were scheduled to accommodate filming.
There is currently no announced date for filming to resume.
Reports also indicate that it is too early to know whether the pause will affect the movie’s theatrical release. For now, Warner Bros. still has The Batman Part II scheduled for February 18, 2028.
That means any suggestion that the sequel has already been delayed again would be premature.
The sequel has already moved several times
The latest interruption inevitably attracts attention because The Batman Part II has had an unusually long journey to theaters.
The sequel was originally dated for October 3, 2025. It was subsequently shifted to October 2, 2026 following disruption surrounding the 2023 Hollywood strikes, then moved again to October 1, 2027. Warner Bros. announced another change in July 2026, pushing the movie to its current February 18, 2028 date.
If that date holds, Part II will arrive almost six years after The Batman opened in March 2022.
That long wait has occasionally fueled speculation about trouble behind the scenes, but this particular pause should be separated from the sequel’s earlier development delays. The studios have explicitly attributed it to a family matter involving Reeves and have publicly expressed their support for him.
Pattinson’s Gotham has grown considerably
When production resumes, Pattinson will return as Bruce Wayne alongside several familiar faces from the first film, including Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb.
The sequel has also significantly expanded its ensemble. Reeves confirmed earlier this year that Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch had joined the cast. Most of their roles have officially been kept under wraps.
Reeves co-wrote the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin, while plot details remain closely guarded.
Pattinson recently offered perhaps the most intriguing clue about the story, describing the sequel as a “real left turn” from The Batman while saying it somehow retains elements of the first movie’s feel. That suggests Reeves is not simply trying to reproduce the detective-thriller structure that defined his 2022 film.
For the moment, though, story speculation is secondary.
DC Studios has made clear that Reeves has its support, and there is no confirmed change to either his role as director or the February 2028 release date. Until the studio announces otherwise, the most accurate description is also the simplest: The Batman Part II is temporarily on hold while its filmmaker deals with a private family matter.
