Disney is ready to plug Tron: Ares into streaming. The studio has confirmed that the latest chapter in the long-running sci-fi franchise will begin streaming on Disney+ from January 7, just three months after its theatrical release.
Directed by Joachim Rønning, the film hit cinemas on October 10 and marks the franchise’s return after more than a decade.
From the Grid to the real world
Tron: Ares flips the franchise’s familiar formula by bringing the digital world into ours. The story follows Ares, an advanced program played by Jared Leto, who is sent from the Grid into the real world — triggering humanity’s first direct encounter with artificial intelligence.
The film also stars Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Gillian Anderson, and Jeff Bridges, who once again reprises his iconic role as Kevin Flynn.
IMAX Enhanced experience on streaming
For viewers watching at home, Tron: Ares will be available in IMAX Enhanced format on Disney+, featuring the expanded aspect ratio typically reserved for IMAX presentations. It joins a growing list of Disney titles offering premium viewing options on streaming.
The earlier films — Tron (1982) and Tron: Legacy (2010) — are already available on the platform, making this a complete franchise binge for fans.
A legacy role returns
Jeff Bridges first introduced Kevin Flynn in Steven Lisberger’s original Tron, before returning in Joseph Kosinski’s Tron: Legacy. His presence in Ares serves as a connective thread across generations, even as the story shifts toward more contemporary AI anxieties.
Bridges and Leto actively promoted the film at CinemaCon and San Diego Comic-Con, where the project generated strong curiosity ahead of release.
Box office didn’t quite ignite
Despite the hype, Tron: Ares struggled to fully connect with theatrical audiences, ending its global run at $142 million. Critics were divided on the film’s originality, with some pointing out that its central ideas felt familiar.
Still, reviews did single out Jared Leto’s restrained performance as a standout, along with his chemistry with Greta Lee, who plays ENCOM CEO Eve Kim — a role that brings the franchise back to its corporate-tech roots.
Final words
While Tron: Ares may not have set the box office on fire, its move to Disney+ could give it a second life. With its sleek visuals, AI-driven themes, and IMAX-enhanced presentation, the film may find a more receptive audience at home — especially among fans ready to revisit the Grid.
