Looks like Amazon MGM Studios may have quietly found its next massive young-adult obsession. The streamer’s romantic college drama Off Campus has exploded in popularity only days after release, pulling in around 36 million viewers worldwide during its first 12 days on Prime Video. For a series that many thought would mainly appeal to romance readers and YA fans, the numbers have honestly turned a lot of heads inside the streaming space.
What makes the achievement even bigger is that the show has already become Prime Video’s third most-watched debut season ever. Only The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Fallout managed stronger opening-season numbers on the platform. Amazon did not fully explain how it calculates viewership data, but still, crossing 36 million views this quickly clearly shows the series has connected strongly with younger audiences, specially women between 18 and 34 years old.
The success also proves that the appetite for steamy college romance dramas is getting much bigger globally now. Over the last year, streaming platforms have heavily leaned into emotionally messy young-adult stories full of romance, heartbreak, friendships, and attractive campus characters. Off Campus arrived at exactly the right moment and somehow managed to catch that wave perfectly.
‘Off Campus’ Turns Hockey Romance Into Prime Video’s New Obsession
Based on the bestselling novels by Elle Kennedy, the series follows the lives of elite college hockey players and the emotional chaos surrounding them. At the center is the relationship between shy songwriter Hannah Wells, played by Ella Bright, and star athlete Garrett Graham, played by Belmont Cameli. Their “opposites attract” chemistry quickly became one of the main talking points online after release.
But the show isn’t only relying on romance scenes and viral edits. A lot of viewers are connecting with the friendship dynamics, identity struggles, and emotional insecurities shown throughout the season. The series mixes glossy college fantasy with slightly emotional storytelling, which is probably why it’s finding such a huge audience on TikTok and social media right now.
The supporting cast has also started building its own fanbase. Characters Dean, Logan, and Tucker are all expected to get deeper romantic storylines moving forward. Season 1 already introduced Allie as Dean’s love interest, while upcoming episodes are expected to focus heavily on Logan’s story with Grace Ivers, who will be played by India Fowler.
Prime Video Doubles Down on YA Romance Content After Massive Response
The strong launch of Off Campus didn’t exactly come out of nowhere. Prime Video has spent the last few years building a very loyal young-adult audience with titles like The Summer I Turned Pretty, We Were Liars, and Maxton Hall. Add the growing popularity of hockey romance stories online, and Off Campus suddenly feels like a calculated move that paid off huge for the streamer.
The platform already renewed the show for Season 2 months before the premiere even happened, which now looks like a very smart decision. Filming for the next season is reportedly expected to begin soon. Amazon executive Peter Friedlander also praised the passionate fan response and said viewers deeply connected with the adaptation created by Louisa Levy and co-showrunner Gina Fattore.
What’s interesting is that Off Campus feels less like a traditional teen drama and more like a streaming-era romance machine designed for binge culture. Between the hockey aesthetic, emotional tension, soundtrack moments, and social media hype, the show already has the kind of fandom energy that platforms dream about now. And honestly, if Season 2 becomes even bigger, this could easily turn into Prime Video’s next long-running young-adult franchise.
