Brendan Fraser is officially heading back to the world that made him a global action star — and this time, Rachel Weisz is returning with him. The beloved duo from The Mummy franchise is reuniting for a long-awaited fourth installment, a project Fraser says he’s been hoping to make for two decades.

“I’ve Been Waiting 20 Years for This Call”

Speaking to The Associated Press, Fraser revealed that the sequel many fans dreamed about is now finally happening.

“The one I wanted to make was never made… but the one I wanted to make is forthcoming,” he shared.
“I’ve been waiting 20 years for this call. Sometimes it was loud, sometimes it was a faint telegraph. Now? It’s time to give the fans what they want.”

The new film will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the directing duo known as Radio Silence, whose work on genre hits has earned a strong reputation in Hollywood.

A Franchise That Defined an Era

Fraser first stepped into the role of adventurer Rick O’Connell in 1999, helping transform Universal’s classic monster into a blockbuster action franchise. The films grew quickly in scale, introduced Dwayne Johnson, spun off new stories, and built a loyal global fanbase before the series paused after Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008.

Universal attempted a reboot in 2017 with Tom Cruise, but the effort never launched the planned “Dark Universe.” For many fans, this return of the original leads is the comeback they’d been waiting for.

While anticipation builds for The Mummy 4, Fraser has been promoting his latest film Rental Family, and recently shared memories from past roles in a conversation with Entertainment Weekly.

A throwback image from George of the Jungle made him laugh — and wince — as he remembered the notorious Tookie Tookie bird.

“I have a lot of fond memories of that time,” he said. “I also remember feeling hungry.”
He paused, recalling the bird’s claws before reminiscing about co-star Leslie Mann, calling her “so funny.”

Another image — this time with Sadie Sink — brought out a more emotional reaction. Fraser spoke warmly about working with the younger actress early in her career, calling her “terrific” and praising her natural focus and instinct.
“I had a front-row seat to watch this kid really give… she’s a proper young woman now.”

Making Movies on the Move

Fraser also opened up about shooting on a moving train for Rental Family, describing it as a whirlwind.

“We had maybe three or four stops and a camera crew on it,” he recalled. Extras mixed with real passengers as the production raced between shots, creating what he described as a “flurry of activity.”

He called the film “a love letter to loneliness,” shaped by the energy of Tokyo and infused with quiet emotion.

Final Words

With Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz returning, The Mummy 4 is set to revive one of the most beloved adventure franchises of the 2000s. After years of stalled attempts and fan campaigns, Fraser’s long-awaited sequel is finally real — and his excitement suggests a nostalgic, emotional return to the world that made moviegoers fall in love with Rick and Evelyn O’Connell.
