Ajay Devgn’s De De Pyaar De 2 entered cinemas with strong expectations, riding on the popularity of the 2019 hit that went on to enjoy both box office success and lasting fan appeal. But two weeks into its theatrical run, the sequel has clearly fallen behind the performance of its predecessor. Despite added star power from R. Madhavan, Meezaan Jafri, Jaaved Jaaferi, and Gautami Kapoor, Part 2’s box office growth has been noticeably weaker in both Week 1 and Week 2.
Second Weekend: Numbers Show a Clear Gap
The original De De Pyaar De had a remarkably steady trend after its opening week, collecting ₹14.04 crore in its second weekend — thanks to strong word-of-mouth and the refreshing dynamic between Ajay Devgn, Tabu, and Rakul Preet Singh.
In comparison, the sequel has posted ₹10.75 crore in its second weekend, falling short by more than ₹3.29 crore.
De De Pyaar De 2 – 2nd Weekend Breakdown
- Friday: ₹2.25 Cr
- Saturday: ₹4 Cr
- Sunday: ₹4.50 Cr (early estimates)
The Saturday jump of 77.78% was encouraging on paper, but the overall weekend total remains below the benchmark set by the first film.
First Week Also Failed to Match Part 1
The trend becomes even clearer when looking at Week 1 figures.
- De De Pyaar De (2019) collected ₹61.05 crore in Week 1 and eventually crossed the ₹100 crore mark.
- De De Pyaar De 2 managed ₹51.10 crore in Week 1 — nearly ₹10 crore less, despite more screens and a larger release footprint.
The film now stands at a total of ₹61.85 crore after the second weekend.
A Small Relief: Screen Retention Boosted the Film
Part 2 was initially expected to lose nearly 20% of its screens to new releases 120 Bahadur and Mastiii 4. Surprisingly, due to the underwhelming performance of Mastiii 4, the sequel retained most of its shows — giving it a chance to hold steady over the weekend.
However, even with that advantage, the film couldn’t recreate the staying power of the original.
Why the Sequel Fell Short
Trade sources point to three major reasons behind the gap:
- A less compelling story compared to the first film
- Comparisons with Part 1’s freshness and charm
- Mixed audience feedback, which reduced its repeat-viewing value
While Part 2 is performing decently in pockets, it lacks the universal appeal that helped the first film sustain a long run.
Final Words
At its current pace, De De Pyaar De 2 is expected to wrap up its theatrical journey at around ₹80 crore, finishing below the bar set by the 2019 original. The sequel has shown moments of stability, but without stronger word-of-mouth, the momentum needed to match Part 1 simply hasn’t materialised.
