The first weekday test has brought a reality check for Alpha. After opening with decent momentum over its first weekend, the YRF Spy Universe film witnessed a noticeable slowdown on Monday, raising fresh questions about its long-term theatrical run. While the collections have dipped significantly both in India and overseas, the film is still managing to stay ahead of one of Alia Bhatt’s biggest spy hits, Raazi, during the same period. That gives the makers something positive to hold on to even as the coming days become increasingly important.
Starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari in the lead, Alpha entered cinemas with solid expectations as the latest chapter in YRF’s expanding spy franchise. The film received support from franchise fans over the weekend, but the real challenge has now shifted to maintaining footfalls during weekdays before fresh competition arrives in theatres.
Monday Drop Slows Alpha’s Box Office Momentum
Released on nearly 9,000 screens across India, Alpha had collected more than ₹6 crore through advance bookings before its release. The film opened with ₹9.25 crore net on Friday and managed to build a respectable first weekend total of ₹34 crore net in India. That performance suggested the film could enjoy a stable run if weekday collections remained healthy.
Monday, however, painted a different picture. The film registered a sharp decline of around 70% compared to Sunday, collecting only ₹3.85 crore net in India. With this, Alpha has earned ₹37.85 crore net domestically after four days, while its domestic gross has reached ₹45.34 crore. Although weekday drops are expected after the opening weekend, the size of this decline will likely be watched closely by trade analysts over the next few days.
The coming week may prove even more challenging for the film. New releases are lined up throughout July, with Dhamaal 4 expected to attract family audiences, while Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated The Odyssey is also likely to command significant attention once it arrives in cinemas. If Alpha cannot stabilize its collections before those releases, its theatrical journey could become more difficult than initially expected.
Overseas Business Keeps Global Total Moving
International markets have offered relatively better support, although the overseas performance also slowed on Monday. The film has collected a little over $2.1 million from international territories after four days. Combined with its domestic earnings, Alpha has now crossed ₹63.64 crore in worldwide gross collections.
The overseas numbers indicate that the YRF Spy Universe continues to enjoy interest among global audiences, particularly in markets where Hindi action films traditionally perform well. However, even overseas business will need stronger weekday holds if the film hopes to post a healthy lifetime total.
Trade experts generally view Monday collections as one of the strongest indicators of a film’s staying power. A good hold often reflects positive audience word-of-mouth, while a steep decline usually puts additional pressure on the remaining weekdays. For Alpha, the next few days will likely determine whether it can recover momentum or continue facing declining numbers.
Still Ahead of Raazi Despite the Slowdown
Even after Monday’s fall, Alpha has managed to stay ahead of Raazi, Alia Bhatt’s acclaimed 2018 spy thriller. During its first four days, Raazi had earned around ₹50 crore worldwide, whereas Alpha has already reached ₹63.64 crore globally.
That said, Raazi displayed much stronger weekday stability. Its first Monday collections were more than double what Alpha managed, helping the Meghna Gulzar directorial build exceptional word-of-mouth and continue earning steadily over the following weeks. This difference in weekday trend remains an important point of comparison between the two films.
Alpha has also slipped behind another major Alia Bhatt success, Gangubai Kathiawadi. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film had crossed ₹75 crore worldwide within its first four days and collected over ₹8 crore net on its first Monday in India. Those stronger weekday numbers ultimately helped it enjoy a successful theatrical run.
For Alia Bhatt, Alpha still represents an improvement after the disappointing commercial performance of Jigra. Although the Vasan Bala-directed film was appreciated by many viewers for its storytelling, it failed to translate that appreciation into strong box office collections and finished with around ₹55 crore worldwide. In comparison, Alpha has already moved beyond that mark globally within just four days.
Big Week Ahead for the YRF Spy Universe Film
Directed by Shiv Rawail and written by Uday Chopra, Alpha expands the YRF Spy Universe with a female-led action story featuring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari. The cast also includes Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor in pivotal roles, while Hrithik Roshan makes a cameo appearance, reprising his popular role from the War franchise and further connecting the film to the larger cinematic universe.
The film now enters its most crucial phase at the box office. Industry estimates suggest Alpha will need to approach the ₹150 crore worldwide mark to comfortably recover its reported production and distribution costs. Achieving that target will depend largely on how well the film holds through the weekdays and whether positive audience response helps offset the impact of upcoming releases.
With several high-profile films arriving in theatres over the next two weeks, Alpha has only a limited window to strengthen its box office performance. The Tuesday and Wednesday collections are now expected to provide a clearer picture of whether the film can regain stability or continue losing momentum after its steep Monday decline.
