Dhanush Says Shankar Isn’t an ‘Angry’ Role, Jokes He Has the Perfect “Heartbreak Face”

With Tere Ishk Mein gearing up for release, Dhanush has been travelling across cities with co-star Kriti Sanon and director Aanand L Rai, giving fans a glimpse into what they can expect from the film. During the Delhi leg of promotions on Saturday, the actor opened up about his character and revealed a surprising (and hilarious) compliment he recently received.

“Apparently I Look Like a Man With a Broken Heart”

Dhanush shared that both Aanand L Rai and Kriti once told him he naturally carries the look of someone who has been through emotional turmoil. Instead of brushing it off, he embraced it with humour.

“They told me I have the face of a heartbroken man… and I took it as a compliment. I think I have a great love-failure face,”
he laughed.

It’s the kind of raw emotion that perfectly fits the world of Tere Ishk Mein, a film rooted deeply in love and pain.

Shankar: A Layered Character, Not an Aggressive One

Talking about his role, Dhanush made it clear that Shankar is far from the typical “angry hero” many might expect.

“Shankar is very easy to like, but he comes with his own set of challenges. When an actor reads something like this, he immediately knows—this is the part worth working for,”
he said.

He added that the character pushed him to go beyond memorising lines or turning up on set:

“It’s not about aggression. It’s about the emotional depth and the work it demands.”

A Major Year for the Actor-Filmmaker

2025 has been one of Dhanush’s busiest years yet. He has juggled multiple roles across filmmaking:

  • Starred in Kuberaa (Tamil & Telugu)
  • Wrote, directed, produced, and headlined Idli Kadai
  • Launched nephew Pavish through Nilavaku En Mel Ennadi Kobam, which he also directed and produced

And now, he closes the year with Tere Ishk Mein, hitting theatres on November 28.

Final Words

Dhanush’s candid comments — from calling his own face “heartbroken” to clarifying Shankar’s true nature — have given fans an intriguing peek into the emotional core of Tere Ishk Mein. As the release date inches closer, his performance is already being touted as one of the big talking points of the film.
