CBFC Clears Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar After Major Mohit Sharma’s Family Raises Concerns; Brother Says They Only Want Respect and Transparency

Aditya Dhar’s upcoming thriller Dhurandhar has officially been cleared for release, ending a tense 48-hour period during which the family of late Major Mohit Sharma approached the Delhi High Court with concerns about the film. The Ranveer Singh–starrer was accused of bearing similarities to the officer’s life, prompting the family to seek a temporary stay until clarity was provided.

Court Seeks Review, CBFC Responds Quickly

On Monday, the Delhi High Court directed the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to closely evaluate the family’s objections and consult the Indian Army if needed before issuing a certificate. Less than a day later, the CBFC announced its decision — Dhurandhar is a work of fiction, and the film has been greenlit for release.

Major Mohit Sharma’s brother, Madhur Sharma, reacted to the development while speaking to HT City:
“I am sure they followed the process. They took a quick decision, which is good. We don’t know what information they looked at, but I’m hopeful a proper disclaimer will be added.”

Family Says a Private Screening Could Have Prevented Confusion

While Madhur appreciates the swift response, he believes a more compassionate approach could have avoided misunderstandings.

“A screening for the parents would have helped,” he said. “They lived with him. They would have been in the best position to say whether anything in the film resembles his life. Someone outside the ecosystem can’t know that.”

The family is still in discussions with their legal team about next steps. “I haven’t spoken to the lawyers yet… we’ll decide if a rejoinder is needed,” he added.

Why the Petition Was Filed — The Timeline Clarified

After the trailer dropped, social media was flooded with posts comparing Major Sharma’s real-life covert operations with Ranveer Singh’s character in the film. Many, including Madhur, publicly requested a clarification.

The filmmaker later denied that the movie was based on the late officer — but by then, the legal wheels were already turning.

Madhur explains the gap clearly:
“There is a 36–48 hour difference between my tweet and Aditya Dhar’s reply. The petition was filed during that time.”

In short, the family acted before the clarification came, not after — a detail that had been misunderstood online.

“We Are Not Looking for Credit or Benefit”

Madhur emphasises that the family has no agenda beyond acknowledgment and transparency.

“There is no benefit the parents are looking for,” he said. “We only want people to see this from an empathetic point of view. This is not just for us, but for every family that has lost a son in military operations.”

He adds:
“If the film is based on him, just say, ‘Sorry, we didn’t inform you.’ If it’s not, then simply say the hype is untrue.”

The Larger Conversation

The incident has opened up a broader discussion on how films inspired by real events should handle communication with families, especially when the subject involves military heroes. While Dhurandhar has now been cleared, the emotional weight carried by families like the Sharmas highlights the importance of sensitivity in storytelling.

Final Words

With the controversy addressed and the CBFC calling Dhurandhar a fictional work, the film is set to release on December 5 as planned. But beyond the certification, the conversation reflects something deeper: a family’s wish for honesty, empathy, and respect for the legacy of a man who served the nation.
