After teasing audiences with Bobby Deol’s striking rockstar look earlier this week, the makers of Bandar have finally dropped the teaser, and it is far more intense than many expected. Directed by Anurag Kashyap, the film appears to move away from glossy commercial storytelling and dive straight into messy fame, personal downfall, and public scandal. The teaser wastes no time setting up an uneasy atmosphere, and honestly, it feels like the kind of raw drama Bollywood has been missing lately.
The promo opens with Bobby Deol entering a crowded party like a proper aging rockstar. Glittery sunglasses, flashy jackets, loud music, fans filming him everywhere — the character of Sameer Mehra initially looks like someone still trying hard to live inside his old celebrity image. There is charm on the surface, but the teaser slowly hints that something feels broken underneath all that swagger. Bobby’s body language itself carries exhaustion and insecurity even in the glamorous moments, which makes the character instantly more interesting.
Things become more uncomfortable once the teaser moves into Sameer’s personal life. The film shows him casually meeting women through dating apps while openly admitting he sometimes thinks he is “terrible” or “creepy.” Those scenes feel intentionally awkward rather than romantic, and that uneasy tone suddenly explodes when the character gets arrested for alleged sexual assault. From there, the teaser completely changes mood. The flashy celebrity lifestyle disappears and gets replaced by interrogation rooms, courtroom tension, emotional breakdowns, and public humiliation.
While Sameer insists he is being framed, the teaser smartly avoids revealing whether he is innocent or guilty. That ambiguity probably becomes the film’s biggest hook. Instead of treating the scandal like simple hero-versus-villain storytelling, Bandar seems more interested in exploring how fame, power, ego, and perception collide when a public figure falls apart. That layered approach feels very classic Anurag Kashyap, especially for audiences who have missed the filmmaker’s darker storytelling style in recent years.
Sanya Malhotra appears in the teaser as Sameer’s sister, and even with limited screen time, her role already looks emotionally heavy. She is shown trying desperately to protect her brother while dealing with lawyers, public outrage, and the emotional chaos surrounding the case. Unlike many Bollywood thrillers where female characters become secondary emotional support, this film seems to position Sanya’s character as a major emotional anchor in the narrative.
The teaser’s final prison-cell shot leaves a strong impact too. Bobby’s crooked smile while sitting behind bars does not feel heroic or villainous — it just feels disturbing and unpredictable. The makers also flash a line claiming the film is inspired by true events, which immediately adds another layer of curiosity around the story. Viewers online quickly began speculating about possible real-life inspirations, though the film has not officially confirmed any direct connection.
Social media reactions after the teaser launch have been surprisingly positive. Many fans praised the return of the darker, grounded Anurag Kashyap style they felt had been missing for years. Others were mainly excited to see Bobby Deol leading a performance-heavy project again after spending recent years mostly appearing in larger commercial entertainer roles and villain characters. Comments like “Finally Anurag is back” and “This is true cinema” quickly started trending across platforms soon after the teaser release.
The film already carries strong festival credibility too. Bandar premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, which raised curiosity long before its commercial release plans became public. Kashyap himself recently praised Bobby Deol in an interview, saying the actor completely surrendered to the role despite finally receiving mainstream commercial offers again after years of career ups and downs. According to the filmmaker, Bobby embraced vulnerability in a way audiences have never really seen before on screen.
Written by Sudip Sharma and Abhishek Banerjee, the film also stars Sapna Pabbi, Saba Azad, Indrajith Sukumaran, Jitendra Joshi, Raj B Shetty and Nagesh Bhonsle in important roles. Produced by Saffron Entertainment and presented by Zee Studios, the film is currently scheduled to release in theatres on June 5.
From the teaser alone, Bandar does not look interested in being comfortable or crowd-pleasing. It looks messy, emotionally ugly, morally confusing, and deeply human — which might exactly be why audiences are suddenly paying attention to it.
