Just when it seemed Animal had finished its theatrical journey, the Ranbir Kapoor starrer is getting a second life on the big screen. Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s controversial blockbuster is officially set for a theatrical release in Japan, nearly two years after its original India debut.
The makers confirmed on Wednesday that Animal will arrive in Japanese theatres on February 13, 2026, tapping into a market that has recently shown growing interest in large-scale Indian cinema.
Official announcement sparks buzz
Production banner Bhadrakali Films made the announcement on social media, unveiling a Japan-specific poster featuring Ranbir Kapoor. The caption described the film as “the most talked-about, debated, and unforgettable cinematic experience,” hinting at the intense, polarising nature that defined Animal during its original run.
The announcement immediately sparked discussion, especially around what the Japan release could mean for the film’s already massive box office legacy.
A second shot at the ₹1000 crore milestone?
Originally released in December 2023, Animal was a juggernaut at the box office:
- India net: ₹553 crore
- Worldwide gross: ₹915 crore
It wrapped up its global run as the 9th-highest-grossing Indian film of all time, narrowly missing the ₹1000 crore club.
The Japan release now gives Animal a realistic chance to cross that landmark. In recent years, Indian films have found surprising success in Japan. RRR reportedly collected over ₹150 crore there, while KGF Chapter 2 earned around ₹70 crore. Even a moderate performance in that range could push Animal past the ₹1000 crore mark worldwide.
The Dhurandhar factor
Timing, however, is everything. Animal is expected to lose its current all-time ranking spot to Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar, which is racing toward the ₹1000 crore global milestone and is projected to finish between ₹1000–1100 crore worldwide.
For Animal to reclaim its position, the Japan run would need to be exceptionally strong — possibly even RRR-level extraordinary. While that may be a tall order, the possibility isn’t being ruled out just yet.
About the film
Animal starred Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, Bobby Deol, and Triptii Dimri in key roles. Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the film drew intense criticism for its extreme violence and perceived misogynistic themes, even as it found massive audience support.
Vanga consistently defended the film, stating that its choices were rooted in creative freedom — a debate that only fueled the film’s visibility and box office pull.
Final words
With its Japan release locked for February 2026, Animal isn’t done making noise. Whether it reclaims its all-time ranking or not, the film’s continued global journey proves one thing clearly — controversial or not, Animal still has unfinished business at the box office.
