Salman Khan’s Maatrubhumi Not Heading to OTT, Makers Lock Big-Screen Plan Amid Controversy

Salman Khan’s next big project has been surrounded by whispers, confusion, and a fair bit of speculation—but one thing is now clear: Maatrubhumi isn’t skipping theatres. Despite ongoing chatter about censorship changes and a possible OTT release, insiders say the film is firmly locked for the big screen.

The rumours picked up pace after reports claimed that sensitive references—especially those linked to China—were being toned down or removed. That led many to assume the film might quietly move to streaming platforms to avoid scrutiny. But that narrative doesn’t hold up, at least according to people close to the film.

Industry sources have made it clear that Salman Khan is backing this project as a full-scale theatrical experience. The film has been mounted on a grand canvas, and both Salman and director Apoorva Lakhia are said to be committed to releasing it in cinemas once the ongoing issues are sorted. Simply put, this isn’t a film designed for a quiet digital drop.

There’s also a major misunderstanding doing the rounds—that OTT releases don’t face censorship. That’s not true. Films released on streaming platforms still need certification and clearance from authorities. So even if Maatrubhumi were to go digital, it wouldn’t bypass regulatory checks. That route doesn’t really solve the current concerns.

What’s interesting is how much the film itself has evolved. Initially titled Battle of Galwan, the project was reportedly inspired by the 2020 Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese troops. The early teaser even leaned heavily into that real-world conflict, showing Salman Khan leading soldiers in a tense, close-combat setting in Eastern Ladakh.

But things have clearly shifted since then.

The film has now been reworked significantly—new title, altered narrative focus, and reportedly extensive reshoots. Direct references to China and Galwan Valley have been dropped, suggesting a move toward a more generalized war drama rather than a direct real-life depiction. This change likely comes after backlash from Chinese state media, including Global Times, which had earlier accused the teaser of distorting facts and pushing anti-China sentiment.

Backed by Salman Khan Films and produced by Salma Khan, the film stars Salman Khan as an Indian Army Colonel, with Chitrangda Singh in a key role. The revised vision of Maatrubhumi now aims to balance battlefield intensity with emotional depth—touching on themes of courage, sacrifice, and personal relationships amid conflict.

At this point, the release date is still under wraps. But one thing’s certain: whenever Maatrubhumi arrives, it’s aiming for the theatre screen, not your OTT homepage.
