Matt Damon Dropped to His High-School Weight for Nolan’s The Odyssey: “Lean, But Strong”

Matt Damon Dropped to His High-School Weight

Matt Damon went all the way back to his teenage years — at least on the weighing scale — for his next big-screen transformation. The Hollywood star has revealed that he slimmed down dramatically while filming The Odyssey, shedding pounds to reach a weight he hadn’t seen since high school.

The transformation was part of director Christopher Nolan’s vision for the epic, with Damon stepping into the legendary role of Odysseus.

167 Pounds, Strict Diet, No Shortcuts

Appearing on the New Heights podcast with Jason and Travis Kelce, Matt Damon opened up about how intense the preparation really was. Damon shared that Nolan wanted Odysseus to look “lean but strong,” pushing him to completely reshape his body.

The actor revealed that during filming, he weighed 167 pounds, a sharp drop from his usual range of 185–200 pounds. “I haven’t been that light since high school,” Damon admitted, adding that the process involved heavy training and a tightly controlled diet.

One major lifestyle change? Going gluten-free — something he initially did for health reasons, but ended up sticking with throughout the shoot.

Training Like It Was a ‘Season’

Damon compared the physical prep for The Odyssey to an athlete gearing up for a competitive season. With a clear goal in mind, his days revolved around workouts, recovery, and discipline — a rhythm he’s familiar with from physically demanding roles like the Bourne franchise.

He credited a long-time trainer for helping him manage the transformation safely, explaining that once the routine locks in, it becomes part of the job rather than a struggle.

Interestingly, Damon says he still hasn’t gone back to gluten. “I’m done,” he joked, adding that he’s even found gluten-free beer — though he’s not entirely sure how it compares to the real thing anymore.

Inside Nolan’s Mythic Epic

The Odyssey is Nolan’s ambitious adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek poem, shot across multiple countries using brand-new IMAX technology. The story traces Odysseus’ journey through war, loss, survival, and his long road home following the Trojan War.

Universal Pictures recently released a teaser showcasing sweeping visuals, glimpses of the Trojan Horse, and Damon’s hardened, battle-worn Odysseus — a look that now makes perfect sense given the physical demands of the role.

A Star-Studded Cast

Alongside Damon, the film features an ensemble packed with A-list talent, including Tom Holland, Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, and several others.

With Nolan behind the camera and Damon undergoing one of his leanest transformations yet, expectations around the film are already sky-high.

Final Words

Matt Damon’s dedication to The Odyssey goes beyond myth and spectacle — it’s a reminder of how far actors still push themselves for the right role. Dropping to his high-school weight at 55, reshaping his routine, and committing fully to Nolan’s vision, Damon’s Odysseus is already shaping up to be one of his most physically authentic performances.

The Odyssey sails into theatres on July 17.
