The legal battle involving former NCT member Taeil has reached its end. South Korea’s Supreme Court has rejected the singer’s final appeal, confirming that he will serve the three years and six months prison sentence earlier handed down for aggravated rape.
The ruling brings closure to a case that has cast a long shadow over the K-pop industry since allegations first surfaced in 2023.
Supreme Court upholds conviction
On December 26, the country’s highest court dismissed the final appeal filed by Taeil and his two co-accused. With this decision, the sentence imposed by the lower court remains intact, making it mandatory for Taeil to serve his jail term.
The case stems from a June 2023 incident, in which Taeil and two acquaintances, identified as Lee and Hong, were accused of sexually assaulting an intoxicated foreign woman who was unable to resist.
Court calls the crime “extremely grave”
During earlier proceedings, the court described the act as “extremely grave in nature.” Judges also noted the additional psychological trauma suffered by the victim, who was assaulted while travelling in a foreign country.
“The victim, a foreign tourist, likely suffered severe psychological trauma from being assaulted in an unfamiliar country,” the court observed in its ruling.
Taeil was first questioned by police in August 2023, and the case progressed steadily through the judicial system.
Sentence details and additional restrictions
The Seoul High Court had previously upheld Taeil’s conviction under the Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes and Protection of Victims, ordering his immediate detention.
Along with the 3.5-year prison sentence, the court also imposed:
- 40 hours of mandatory sexual violence treatment
- A five-year employment ban from institutions involving children, adolescents, and persons with disabilities
Taeil’s legal team argued for leniency during the appeal, stating that he had voluntarily turned himself in. The court, however, rejected the plea.
From rising idol to criminal conviction
Taeil debuted in 2016 as part of NCT U, later becoming a core member of NCT 127. Known for his vocal strength, he was considered a key contributor to the group’s success during its peak years.
Following the investigation, SM Entertainment officially removed Taeil from the group in August 2024, distancing itself from the scandal.
In July 2025, the lower court formally sentenced him and ordered his immediate detention — a decision now fully upheld by the Supreme Court.
Final words
The Supreme Court’s decision marks the end of Taeil’s legal options and underscores South Korea’s firm stance on sexual crimes, particularly those involving incapacitated victims. Once a prominent K-pop idol, Taeil now faces the full weight of the law — a stark reminder that fame offers no shield from accountability.
