The dispute over late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s estate intensified on Monday, with his mother Rani Kapur levelling fresh allegations against his widow, Priya Sachdev Kapur, in the Delhi High Court. What began as a challenge to the authenticity of Sunjay’s will has now expanded into a battle over his undisclosed wealth, prompting questions about missing assets, offshore transfers, and family traditions surrounding inheritance.
New Allegations Against Priya Sachdev
Represented by Senior Advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, Rani Kapur alleged that Priya concealed “massive” portions of her late husband’s finances. In court, the counsel questioned how an industrialist with an annual salary of ₹60 crore could leave behind just over ₹1 crore in disclosed bank accounts.
The submission included references to Sunjay’s Delhi farmhouse in Rajokri — a property Rani claims was built by her late husband — and more than 50 artworks housed there. The counsel suggested money may have been moved out of India, urging the court to seek financial details from both Sunjay and Priya for the past two years.
“There has been massive concealment,” the lawyer argued. “The money has moved, potentially across borders.”
The Will Under Question
The hearing comes amid a larger suit filed by Samaira and Kiaan, Sunjay’s children with Karisma Kapoor, who allege that the will produced by Priya is forged. The children have requested an interim injunction preventing Priya from creating third-party rights over Sunjay’s assets until the case is resolved.
Rani’s counsel also pushed back against Priya’s claim that it is Kapur family tradition for husbands to leave their personal estates to their wives — citing Sunjay’s late father’s will as precedent.
The lawyer distinguished the situations firmly:
- “I was married to my husband for forty years,” Rani’s counsel said.
- “Priya was married to Sunjay for seven.”
He also questioned the credibility of the will’s witness, noting that the person reportedly had no association with the family business before 2022.
The matter was heard by Justice Jyoti Singh, who will take it up again on December 3.
How the Feud Began
The conflict erupted after Samaira and Kiaan filed a petition challenging Priya’s version of Sunjay’s will. Notices were issued to Priya and to Shradha Suri Marwah, the alleged executor of the will, asking them to respond.
The children claim the will was “forged and fabricated” to exclude them from inheriting their father’s estate. They are seeking court protection to prevent any sale, transfer, or dilution of Sunjay’s assets during the case.
Who Was Sunjay Kapur?
Sunjay Kapur, chairman of Sona Comstar, was a prominent figure in India’s auto components industry. He died unexpectedly in June during a polo match in London.
His personal life had often been the subject of public attention. He married actor Karisma Kapoor in 2003, and the couple share two children. Following their divorce in 2016, Sunjay married entrepreneur Priya Sachdev in 2017.
Final Words
As the Kapur family feud moves deeper into the legal arena, questions over the authenticity of Sunjay’s will and the whereabouts of his wealth continue to grow. With allegations of missing assets, tradition-based arguments, and concerns about offshore transfers all now in play, the case is shaping into one of the most closely watched inheritance disputes of the year.
