Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz’s long-awaited return to The Mummy franchise finally has an official title. Universal Pictures has announced that the fourth instalment will be called The Mummy: Book of the Dead, with a theatrical release scheduled for October 15, 2027.
The studio revealed the title alongside a new logo, confirming that the adventure is exactly one year away.
Why The Mummy: Book of the Dead Title Matters
The title makes an interesting connection to the original 1999 film.
In Stephen Sommers’ The Mummy, the ancient Book of the Dead played a crucial role when Evelyn accidentally awakened the cursed priest Imhotep by reading its contents.
Its inclusion in the new title could suggest a return to the supernatural mythology that established the franchise. However, Universal has not confirmed whether the book itself or Imhotep will feature in the storyline.
Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz Reunite After 26 Years
Fraser returns as adventurer Rick O’Connell, while Weisz reprises her role as Evelyn O’Connell.
Their last appearance together in the franchise was 2001’s The Mummy Returns. Weisz skipped the 2008 sequel, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, where Maria Bello replaced her.
John Hannah, Oded Fehr and Kevin J. O’Connor are also returning, alongside newcomers Michael Johnston and Numan Acar.
The film is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the duo behind Ready or Not and the 2022 Scream revival, from a screenplay by David Coggeshall.
With production underway, Universal has yet to reveal the official plot or first trailer.
