Jeremy Renner has confirmed that Hawkeye will not appear in Avengers: Doomsday, and he has a hilarious prediction about what that means for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. The actor joked that the Avengers would probably lose their upcoming battle against Doctor Doom because Marvel Studios never contacted him about returning.
During a recently circulated Q&A clip, Renner was asked whether he would reprise his role as Clint Barton in the highly anticipated Marvel film.
“Doomsday I’m not in, so the Avengers will probably lose,” Renner joked.
He then added, “They didn’t call me, so it’s their fault.”
His playful response has revived an amusing coincidence from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s history.
Hawkeye Was Also Missing When the Avengers Lost to Thanos
Interestingly, Renner’s prediction has some history behind it.
Hawkeye was absent from 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, which ended with Thanos wiping out half of all life in the universe.
However, Clint Barton returned in Avengers: Endgame (2019), helping the surviving heroes reverse Thanos’ victory.
During Renner’s recent remarks, an audience member reportedly shouted “again,” referencing the Avengers’ earlier defeat without Hawkeye.
Of course, Renner’s comments were intended as a joke rather than confirmation of Doomsday’s ending.
Will Jeremy Renner Return in Avengers: Secret Wars?
Although Renner has ruled out appearing in Doomsday, his future in the MCU remains uncertain.
The actor last portrayed Clint Barton in Disney+’s Hawkeye series in 2021, where he mentored Kate Bishop, played by Hailee Steinfeld.
Renner previously expressed interest in returning to the franchise, including potentially making another season of Hawkeye.
However, Marvel has not confirmed his involvement in Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled for December 17, 2027.
Meanwhile, Avengers: Doomsday will feature Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, alongside returning Marvel stars including Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh and Pedro Pascal.
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the film arrives in theatres on December 18, 2026.
Whether Hawkeye’s absence proves significant to the story remains unknown, but Renner has certainly found an entertaining way to remind audiences of his character’s importance.
