Ranvir Shorey Slams CJP Protest, Urges Legal Action

Bollywood actor Ranvir Shorey has strongly criticised the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) call for street protests in Delhi, arguing that political grievances should be addressed through courts, Parliament and elections rather than demonstrations that disrupt public life.

The actor shared his views on X on October 11, 2026, responding to a video of CJP spokesperson Saurav Das urging citizens to join the ongoing protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

“Show your numbers in Parliament and the ballot, not the streets!” Shorey wrote, adding that protesters should approach the courts if they believe electoral processes are unfair.

Ranvir Shorey Calls Street Protests a Last Resort

Shorey argued that obstructing public infrastructure and disrupting law enforcement amounted to “the actual ‘murder of democracy’!”

He maintained that protests should be a last resort rather than a substitute for available legal remedies.

The actor also questioned repeated demonstrations that inconvenience ordinary citizens, arguing that the right to dissent should not come at the expense of public life.

His remarks contrast with those of several entertainment personalities, including Huma Qureshi, Sonakshi Sinha and Vijay Varma, who have criticised the authorities’ handling of the demonstrations.

Why Is CJP Protesting in Delhi?

The controversy centres on CJP’s demand for Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The Election Commission has denied allegations that the exercise unfairly favours any political party.

On October 10, Delhi Police detained CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka ahead of a planned protest at Jantar Mantar. They were subsequently released.

On October 12, CJP representatives requested that police designate a date for a peaceful demonstration, reiterating their constitutional right to assemble.

Shorey’s comments highlight a broader disagreement over the limits of street protests. While he emphasises institutional remedies and public order, demonstrators maintain that peaceful assembly remains an important democratic right.
