A minor fire incident has been reported at the Mumbai production location being used for Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi. According to Federation of Western India Cine Employees president B.N. Tiwari, the blaze began in a tent outside Prime Focus Studios and was brought under control before it could spread further. No injuries were reported, and the damage was described as limited.
Tiwari told India Today: “Fortunately, no one was hurt and the damage was also minor.” He added that production activity resumed after the initial disruption.
The incident comes just weeks before the first instalment of the ambitious two-part adaptation, officially titled Ramayana: Rise of a Legend, is scheduled to begin its theatrical rollout in November.
What actually caught fire?
Early reports around the incident created some confusion because dramatic videos of a much larger blaze at Mumbai’s Film City were circulating online at roughly the same time.
According to India Today, the Ramayana-related incident involved tents outside Prime Focus Studios, where the film is being shot. B.N. Tiwari said the fire was contained before it could threaten the wider set or people working there.
Separately, Mumbai fire officials reported that a temporary structure behind the studio area caught fire at around 4 p.m. and that emergency crews extinguished the blaze by approximately 4:55 p.m. No injuries were reported in that incident either.
However, Free Press Journal subsequently reported an important clarification: the Ramayana team denied that the large Film City blaze shown in viral videos occurred on its set. That fire was instead linked in reports to the production areas for television shows Pati Patni Aur Panga 2 and MTV Hustle 5.
In other words, reports appear to have blurred together activity around the same production area. What has been confirmed by the FWICE president is a minor fire connected to a tent outside the studio where Ramayana is being shot; the more dramatic viral footage should not automatically be described as the Ramayana set itself.
FWICE says the incident should be a safety warning
Tiwari’s comments also raised a broader production-safety issue. He said producers in the area had already been contacted following an earlier nearby fire and asked to ensure adequate precautions were in place.
He characterised the latest incident as resulting from “carelessness” and said it should serve as a warning for production teams to strengthen fire-safety measures.
Despite that criticism, there is currently no indication that anyone working on Ramayana was injured or that the movie suffered significant set damage. India Today reported that filming resumed after the situation was brought under control.
Ramayana is approaching its November release
The timing naturally drew attention because Ramayana is one of the largest Indian film productions currently underway. Prime Focus Studios lists Nitesh Tiwari as director and Namit Malhotra as producer, with the project being produced by Prime Focus Studios and Monster Mind Creations.
Ranbir Kapoor stars as Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana, while Sunny Deol plays Hanuman and Ravie Dubey portrays Lakshmana. The first instalment, Ramayana: Rise of a Legend, is scheduled for a November 6, 2026 worldwide theatrical rollout, with IMAX and other premium-format presentations planned.
For now, the most important update is also the reassuring one: the reported fire caused no injuries, the damage was minor, and there has been no announcement of any change to Ramayana’s release plans.
