With just days left before its theatrical release, Alpha has crossed another major milestone. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has officially cleared the YRF Spy Universe film with a UA 16+ certificate, paving the way for its worldwide release on July 3. Starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari in the lead, the action thriller has already generated strong buzz after its teaser and trailer introduced audiences to a darker and more intense chapter of the expanding spy franchise.
Directed by Shiv Rawail, Alpha marks a significant addition to Yash Raj Films’ ambitious cinematic universe. Apart from Alia and Sharvari, the film also features Bobby Deol and Anil Kapoor in pivotal roles. With certification now complete, the makers have also confirmed the film’s official runtime, giving fans a better idea of what to expect from the action-packed entertainer.
CBFC Confirms Runtime And Story Details
Along with awarding the film a UA 16+ certificate, the CBFC has revealed that Alpha will have a runtime of 140 minutes, which translates to 2 hours and 20 minutes. The duration suggests the film will combine large-scale action sequences with character-driven storytelling, a formula that has become a trademark of the YRF Spy Universe.
The censor certificate also includes an official plot summary, offering a fresh glimpse into Alia Bhatt’s character, Sita. According to the synopsis, “Driven by revenge, a young girl destroys anyone in her path until her journey uncovers the hidden truths of her own life. She is bold, cold, and ready to cross any line, hurting anyone who stands in her way.”
The description hints that Sita will be one of the most ruthless characters introduced in the franchise so far. Unlike previous spy heroes, her journey appears to be driven by deeply personal emotions, suggesting Alpha will blend espionage with an emotional revenge story.
Why Alpha Matters For The YRF Spy Universe
Alpha becomes the fourth standalone film in the YRF Spy Universe and the seventh overall after Ek Tha Tiger, Tiger Zinda Hai, War, Pathaan, Tiger 3 and War 2. More importantly, it introduces Alia Bhatt as the franchise’s first female lead spy, expanding a universe previously led by characters played by Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan.
The film also carries considerable expectations for Yash Raj Films. While the spy franchise remains one of Bollywood’s biggest cinematic brands, the recent installments received a more mixed response than earlier entries. With Alpha, the studio will be aiming to inject fresh energy into the universe while opening the door for more female-led stories in future chapters.
For Alia Bhatt, the project arrives at an important stage in her career. After Jigra failed to meet box office expectations, Alpha gives the actress an opportunity to headline a large-scale commercial action film before moving on to her next project, Love & War, alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal.
Box Office Battle Begins This Week
The promotional campaign for Alpha has taken an unusual route. Despite releasing a teaser and trailer, the makers have deliberately kept the film’s songs under wraps instead of unveiling them before release. The decision appears aimed at giving theatre audiences a fresh experience, though whether the strategy pays off will only become clear after the film reaches cinemas.
The road at the box office may not be entirely smooth either. Welcome To The Jungle continues to attract audiences, while Dhamaal 4 is scheduled to arrive on July 10, giving Alpha only a limited window to maximise its theatrical business. Even so, the combination of the YRF Spy Universe brand, Alia Bhatt’s action debut and a strong supporting cast has ensured that the film remains one of the biggest Bollywood releases of the year.
Now that the CBFC certification is complete, all eyes are on July 3, when audiences will finally discover whether Alpha can open a powerful new chapter for the YRF Spy Universe and establish Alia Bhatt as its next major action star.
