What was probably meant as a casual observation during an interview quickly turned into a heated debate on social media after many users felt the director’s words about Deepika’s “good girl image” sounded disrespectful. As reactions kept growing, Imtiaz decided not to stay silent and personally addressed the actress through a heartfelt public note.
The director, who has worked closely with Deepika in some of her most loved films, appeared genuinely worried that his statement may have hurt her feelings. Instead of issuing a cold PR clarification, Imtiaz wrote in a very personal and emotional tone, almost like a message between old friends. His response has now become a talking point itself because many fans noticed how protective and affectionate he sounded while talking about the actress.
Imtiaz Calls His Comments ‘Wannabe Fun’
On Monday, Imtiaz shared a screenshot of a headline discussing the controversy and directly addressed Deepika in a long social media note. In the message, he called her his “pal”, “buddy”, and even his “safe option for humour”. The filmmaker insisted that there was never any intention to insult her and said she knows better than anyone how much admiration and love he has for her.
He also admitted that people around him warned that Deepika could misunderstand the comments, which is why he felt the need to publicly clarify things before the situation got worse. Imtiaz even added a Hindi line saying that being mean to Deepika is “not possible in this lifetime”, which instantly grabbed attention online. The whole post felt less like a formal industry clarification and more like a worried friend trying to explain himself before misunderstandings grow bigger.
Interestingly, many fans also pointed out how rare it is for Bollywood filmmakers to respond this quickly over interview backlash. Usually, controversial remarks are ignored for days until the noise fades away. But in this case, Imtiaz reacted almost immediately, which shows he probably did not expect the comments to be interpreted in such a serious way.
What Imtiaz Said That Started The Debate
The controversy began after Imtiaz spoke about Deepika’s character Veronica from Cocktail during an interview with News18. While discussing the role, he explained that Veronica felt exciting because it was very different from the public image Deepika had at that time. He mentioned attending parties with her and said he knew she could be “crazy and wild” despite projecting what he described as a “good girl image”.
The part that triggered backlash online was when Imtiaz said people have now “seen through the facade”. Many social media users felt the word “facade” sounded unnecessary and harsh, especially while describing a fellow actor publicly. Some users defended him saying the comment was taken out of context, while others argued that the wording crossed a line even if there was no bad intention behind it.
Imtiaz and Deepika share a long creative history together. The actress first collaborated with him in Love Aaj Kal opposite Saif Ali Khan, a film that became hugely popular among younger audiences at the time. They later reunited for Tamasha alongside Ranbir Kapoor, which over the years developed an almost cult-like fan following online.
