Apple TV+ is adding another high-profile thriller to its growing original lineup. The streaming platform has officially ordered Guilty Creatures, a new drama inspired by Mikita Brottman’s acclaimed true-crime book Guilty Creatures: Sex, God, and Murder in Tallahassee, Florida. Emmy winner Julia Garner has signed on to play the lead role while also serving as an executive producer, bringing one of television’s most celebrated actors to another ambitious streaming project.
The announcement also reunites several acclaimed names behind the camera. Filmmaker Craig Gillespie will direct the series, while Stuart Zicherman has been tapped as showrunner and executive producer. With an award-winning creative team and a real-life murder case at its core, the project is already generating attention among fans of psychological crime dramas.
Apple TV+ Brings Acclaimed True-Crime Book To Screen
Guilty Creatures is being adapted for television by Sarah DeLappe, whose previous screenplay for Bodies Bodies Bodies received praise for blending suspense with sharp character writing. The series draws its story from Mikita Brottman’s nonfiction book, which explores a shocking murder case set in Florida’s Panhandle. Rather than simply recounting the crime, the story dives into the complicated relationship between two young lovers whose secret affair ultimately leads to murder.
The psychological drama follows the couple as they struggle with the emotional consequences of their actions while hiding the truth for nearly 18 years. Themes of faith, guilt, love and deception are expected to play a central role throughout the series, offering a more intimate look at the people behind the crime instead of focusing only on the investigation itself. That character-first approach has become increasingly popular among modern true-crime adaptations.
The series is being produced by Tomorrow Studios, an ITV Studios partner, through first-look agreements with Julia Garner’s Alma Margo production company and Craig Gillespie’s Fortunate Jack Productions. Executive producers include Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Alissa Bachner, Sarah DeLappe, Annie Marter and author Mikita Brottman, alongside Garner, Gillespie and Stuart Zicherman.
Julia Garner Continues Her Busy Run Across Film And Television
Julia Garner has steadily become one of Hollywood’s most in-demand performers following her Emmy-winning work in Ozark. Over the last few years, she has balanced prestige television with major studio productions, building a reputation for choosing complex and emotionally demanding roles. Guilty Creatures now adds another major project to an already packed schedule.
The actor will soon headline Netflix’s limited series The Altruists opposite Anthony Boyle, where she also serves as an executive producer. She is currently filming Amazon MGM Studios’ Tyrant alongside Charlize Theron under writer-director David Weil. Garner is also set to appear in the upcoming season of Apple TV+’s hit comedy The Studio, further strengthening her relationship with the streaming platform.
Her recent career has included appearances in two of 2025’s biggest releases, The Fantastic Four: First Steps and the Oscar-nominated horror thriller Weapons. Most recently, he directed DC Studios’ Supergirl, continuing his successful run across both television and feature films.
Showrunner Stuart Zicherman also brings significant television experience to the project. He recently developed the first season of American Sports Story and previously served as showrunner on The Shrink Next Door. His writing credits include acclaimed series such as The Americans, Sweetbitter and The Affair, making him a natural fit for a psychological crime drama built around layered characters and long-buried secrets.
Apple TV+ has continued investing heavily in prestige dramas, particularly within the crime and thriller genres, where shows built on real-life events have found strong global audiences.
