The controversy surrounding Ghooskhor Pandat continues to unfold — and now, its lead star has spoken.
After Netflix took down the teaser of the upcoming crime thriller following backlash over its title, Manoj Bajpayee shared a statement addressing the situation. The actor, who plays the titular role, said he respects the emotions of those who felt hurt and clarified that the film was never meant to target any community.
🎬 Why Was the Teaser Pulled Down?
The film, written and produced by Neeraj Pandey, came under fire after members of the Brahmin community objected to the title, alleging it portrayed the term “Pandat” (or Pandit) in a defamatory light by associating it with corruption.
A petition was filed in the Delhi High Court, claiming the title and promotional material were “communally offensive” and could harm the dignity of the community. Advocate Vineet Jindal sought a stay on the film’s release.
Soon after, Netflix removed the teaser and promotional assets. An FIR has also reportedly been registered at Hazratganj Police Station in Lucknow against director Ritesh Shah and members of the film’s team, following instructions from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
📝 What Manoj Bajpayee Said
Reacting to Neeraj Pandey’s earlier clarification, Bajpayee reshared the statement and wrote that he takes people’s concerns seriously.
He noted that when something he is associated with causes hurt, it makes him “pause and listen.” Emphasizing that he chooses projects based on the character and the story, the actor described his role in Ghooskhor Pandat as that of a flawed individual undergoing self-realisation — not a commentary on any caste or religion.
He also backed the makers’ decision to withdraw the teaser, saying it reflects how seriously the concerns are being treated.
⚖️ The Legal Angle
The petition filed in court argues that using the term “Pandat” in connection with bribery and corruption amounts to collective defamation and could disturb communal harmony.
The matter is now under legal scrutiny, and the film’s release date remains unannounced.
🎭 About the Film
Directed by Ritesh Shah and written by Shah along with Neeraj Pandey, Ghooskhor Pandat is positioned as a crime thriller. Apart from Manoj Bajpayee, the cast includes:
- Nushrratt Bharuccha
- Saqib Saleem
- Akshay Oberoi
- Divya Dutta
Given Neeraj Pandey’s track record with politically layered thrillers, the project was expected to generate strong curiosity even before this controversy erupted.
Final Words
For now, Ghooskhor Pandat stands at a crossroads — caught between creative intent and public sentiment. Manoj Bajpayee’s response suggests a willingness to engage and reflect, while the makers await clarity on the legal front.
Whether the film releases under the same title or undergoes changes remains to be seen. What’s clear is that the conversation around it is far from over.
