Rajpal Yadav Surrenders to Tihar Jail After High Court Denies Relief in Cheque-Bounce Case

Rajpal Yadav Surrenders to Tihar Jail

Actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered before authorities at Tihar Jail on Thursday evening after the Delhi High Court refused to grant him additional time in a long-running cheque-bounce case.

According to news agency PTI, citing a jail source, the actor presented himself to jail authorities around 4 pm. Officials are now following standard operating procedures.

⚖️ Court Refuses Extension

A day earlier, the Delhi High Court declined Rajpal Yadav’s request to extend the deadline for surrender. His legal counsel had reportedly informed the court that ₹50 lakh had been arranged and sought one more week to complete the payment process.

However, the bench refused to grant further relief. In a strong observation, the court stated that it could not create special circumstances for any individual based on their profession or public stature. It also noted that leniency cannot be extended indefinitely, especially in cases of repeated non-compliance.

Earlier this month, on February 2, the court had directed the actor to surrender by 4 pm on Wednesday after observing that previous undertakings to repay the dues had not been honored.

📂 What Is the Case About?

The legal dispute stems from a complaint filed by M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd against Rajpal Yadav and his wife over multiple bounced cheques and alleged failure to clear outstanding payments.

In 2018, a magistrate’s court in Delhi convicted the actor and sentenced him to six months’ imprisonment in the cheque-bounce matter. The conviction was upheld by a sessions court in 2019.

The couple subsequently challenged the decision in the Delhi High Court. In June 2024, the high court temporarily suspended the conviction and encouraged the actor to pursue a sincere settlement with the complainant. However, after repeated delays and unmet commitments, the court reinstated its directive for surrender.

🎬 A Career Interrupted

Rajpal Yadav has long been known for his comic timing and memorable supporting roles in Hindi cinema. Over the years, he has appeared in dozens of films across genres, carving out a niche as one of Bollywood’s most recognizable character actors.

This latest legal development, however, brings an unexpected pause to his public life.

Final Words

The surrender marks a significant turn in a case that has been ongoing for years. With the Delhi High Court taking a firm stance on compliance, the focus now shifts to the next legal steps.

For Rajpal Yadav, the spotlight has moved from cinema screens to courtroom proceedings — a reminder that legal obligations remain binding, regardless of fame.
