Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has lived up to the enormous expectations surrounding its theatrical debut in India. After posting exceptional advance booking numbers ahead of release, the epic has now translated that excitement into packed cinemas, delivering one of the strongest morning openings seen for a Hollywood film this year. Early occupancy figures indicate that audiences have turned out in huge numbers, particularly for premium-format screenings and English-language shows.

The film’s opening also reinforces Nolan’s remarkable box office appeal in India, where his films have consistently drawn audiences to theatres regardless of genre. With premium ticket pricing and strong turnout across major cities, trade experts believe The Odyssey is firmly on course to become the filmmaker’s biggest opening-day performer in the country.

English version dominates opening shows

According to industry tracker Ramesh Bala, the English version of The Odyssey registered an outstanding 90% occupancy during morning shows across India. The dubbed versions also started strongly, recording around 70% occupancy, suggesting that the film is attracting audiences across multiple language markets.

Bala noted that the southern states have contributed significantly to the film’s exceptional start. Cities with IMAX and premium large-format screens have reported particularly high occupancy, continuing the momentum built through record-breaking advance bookings. The early response also highlights the growing demand for large-scale cinematic experiences among Indian audiences, especially for Christopher Nolan’s films.

Meanwhile, Vishek Chauhan, Chief Executive Officer of Roopbani Cinema in Bihar, shared that the Hindi-dubbed version has opened to a respectable response in North India. According to Chauhan, the film recorded 20–25% occupancy in its Hindi morning shows across the region, with stronger footfalls expected as the day progresses into afternoon and evening screenings.

Premium screens drive collections

The strongest response has come from metropolitan cities and Tier-1 markets, where premium ticket prices are expected to significantly boost the film’s opening-day collections. IMAX and other premium-format screenings were already witnessing extraordinary advance bookings before release, and the morning occupancy numbers indicate that demand has remained consistent.

The film is widely expected to surpass Oppenheimer’s opening-day collection of approximately ₹14.50 crore, making it Christopher Nolan’s biggest opener in India. Trade estimates also suggest The Odyssey could challenge Border 2, which currently holds one of the highest opening-day collections of 2026 with around ₹32.10 crore. If evening and night shows continue at the current pace, the film could emerge as one of the biggest Hollywood openers ever in the Indian market.

The release has also benefited from arriving without a major direct competitor in cinemas, allowing exhibitors to allocate a large share of premium and standard screens to Nolan’s latest spectacle. That wide release strategy has further strengthened its opening-day prospects.

Competition awaits next week

While The Odyssey currently enjoys an uninterrupted run at the box office, the situation is expected to change in the coming week. In the southern markets, particularly Tamil Nadu, the film will face stiff competition from C. Joseph Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, the actor-turned-politician’s much-anticipated final film before his full-time political career.

The release has also reduced screen availability for Ajay Devgn’s Dhamaal 4, which is targeting audiences in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities along with mass-market centres. Although the two films cater to different audience segments, exhibitors will closely monitor how both titles perform over the weekend as screen allocation and occupancy patterns continue to evolve.

With packed morning shows, strong advance bookings already in the bank, and premium screens driving revenue, The Odyssey has delivered exactly the kind of explosive start exhibitors were hoping for. The focus now shifts to whether Christopher Nolan’s latest epic can maintain this momentum throughout the weekend and secure one of the biggest opening weekends ever recorded for a Hollywood release in India.
