Fans hoping to see Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman together again after the massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine are getting another team-up, although this one comes with far fewer superheroes and a lot more ocean water. Disney+ has officially ordered a new unscripted series following the Hollywood stars as they step into the world of professional sailing through their ownership of Australia’s SailGP team.
The upcoming docuseries will focus on the Bonds Flying Roos, one of the teams competing in the global SailGP Championship. While Reynolds and Jackman may be newcomers to competitive sailing, the athletes they now back are among the best in the sport. The series promises an inside look at what it takes to compete at the highest level while also capturing the unique dynamic between two of Hollywood’s most recognizable friends.
The announcement arrives at a time when sports ownership documentaries continue to attract huge audiences. Following the success of projects centered around football clubs and other professional teams, Disney appears eager to bring viewers behind the scenes of another ambitious sporting venture.
Hollywood Meets High-Speed Sailing
Unlike traditional sailing competitions, SailGP is built around speed, technology, and intense international rivalries. Teams race identical 50-foot foiling catamarans capable of reaching speeds above 60 miles per hour, creating a spectacle that feels closer to Formula 1 on water than conventional sailing.
At the center of the Australian team is driver and CEO Tom Slingsby, one of the most accomplished figures in the sport. His résumé includes Olympic gold, an America’s Cup victory, and multiple SailGP championships. The series will reportedly follow both the athletes competing on the water and the celebrity owners learning the realities of running a world-class sports organization.
Reynolds and Jackman leaned into their trademark humor while announcing the project, joking that the show would contain action, comedy, heart, and hopefully a few pirates along the way. Their playful chemistry has become a fan favorite over the years, helping turn nearly every joint appearance into a viral moment.
Disney Expands Its Sports Documentary Lineup
The new series also continues a growing trend that Reynolds helped popularize through Welcome to Wrexham. That show chronicled the actor’s ownership journey with Welsh football club Wrexham and became one of the most successful sports docuseries in recent years.
Disney has since expanded the formula with additional projects, including one centered on actress Eva Longoria and her involvement with Mexican football club Necaxa. The sailing series represents another step in that direction, blending sports, celebrity culture, and behind-the-scenes storytelling.
The project will be produced by Maximum Effort, the production company founded by Ryan Reynolds, alongside Eureka Productions. It will also feature involvement from SailGP and the Bonds Flying Roos organization. Director Brent Hodge has been tapped to lead the series as both director and showrunner.
For Disney+, the appeal is clear. The combination of elite competition, international travel, and the friendship between Reynolds and Hugh Jackman offers plenty of material for a global audience. And for fans who enjoyed watching the pair trade jokes in Deadpool & Wolverine, this may be the closest thing to a sequel they’ll get in the near future—even if the battlefield has been replaced by open water.
