As Sayani Gupta basks in the success of Four More Shots Please! Season 4, the actress has opened up about a deeply personal chapter from her early life — one that nearly derailed her journey into films before it even began.
In a candid interview, Sayani revealed that her decision to pursue acting was met with intense resistance at home, especially from her mother, who strongly opposed the profession and struggled to accept her daughter’s choice.
A High-Paying Job — And a Bigger Restlessness
At just 21, Sayani was already financially secure, holding a lucrative corporate job. By her own admission, she was a workaholic and earning well. But the stability didn’t bring fulfillment.
She recalled feeling stuck and creatively drained, saying she was “bored out of her skull” despite the money. That restlessness ultimately pushed her to take a leap of faith — one that involved quitting her job and enrolling at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune.
“Actors Are Prostitutes”: A Shocking Reaction at Home
That decision didn’t go down well.
Sayani shared that her mother was completely against the idea of her becoming an actress and had a deeply negative perception of the profession. Growing up, she was reportedly discouraged from attending theatre rehearsals and even locked in her room at times because acting was seen as unacceptable.
In the interview, Sayani revealed how extreme the emotional resistance became, recalling a moment when her mother emotionally threatened self-harm if she chose to go ahead. The statement, while painful to revisit, highlighted the depth of fear and misunderstanding surrounding acting careers in many traditional households.
Her mother, she said, simply couldn’t comprehend why her daughter would walk away from a secure corporate future.
FTII Changed Everything — Including Her Mother’s Mind
Despite the opposition, Sayani followed her instincts and joined FTII. Over time, something unexpected happened.
When her mother visited the campus, FTII students — who were looking for older actors for their short films — approached her. She was offered multiple roles and eventually acted in one student film herself.
That firsthand experience changed everything.
Seeing the craft up close, and experiencing acting beyond stereotypes, Sayani’s mother began to soften. She eventually told her daughter that if acting was what she wanted to do for the next couple of years, “maybe it’s not so bad.”
For Sayani, that shift marked a quiet but powerful turning point.
From Resistance to Recognition
Years later, Sayani has built a strong body of work across films and streaming platforms. Her performances in Fan, Jolly LLB 2, and Pagglait have earned her critical praise, while Four More Shots Please! has cemented her place with modern audiences.
Final Words
Sayani Gupta’s story isn’t just about chasing a dream — it’s about challenging deeply ingrained beliefs, choosing uncertainty over comfort, and staying true to one’s calling even when support is absent. Her journey reflects the reality many artists face behind the scenes, long before the applause begins.
Sometimes, the hardest role to play is simply standing up for yourself — and Sayani did exactly that.
