Akshay Kumar is stepping into completely unfamiliar territory with his next big-screen project, and honestly, this one sounds far more ambitious than the usual commercial action films Bollywood keeps producing every year. The actor has now officially teamed up once again with producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah for Samuk, an upcoming alien action thriller that the makers are already calling India’s biggest attempt at the genre. The film is planned for a 2027 theatrical release and is expected to mix survival horror, sci-fi action, and creature thriller elements on a much larger scale than audiences normally see in Indian cinema.
What’s making the project stand out immediately is the fact that Bollywood rarely dives fully into alien horror storytelling. Indian films have touched science fiction before, but pure survival-based alien thrillers have mostly remained unexplored territory. That’s exactly why Samuk is already creating curiosity online. According to the makers, the film aims to combine grounded action with large-scale world-building and heavy practical effects instead of relying only on computer-generated spectacle.
Akshay himself admitted the genre was one of the biggest reasons he signed the project. The actor said he found the script fascinating and called alien thrillers something entirely fresh not only for him personally but also for mainstream Indian cinema. Considering how long Akshay has spent balancing patriotic dramas, action entertainers, and comedy films, this project honestly feels like a surprising shift in direction. It also comes during a phase where Bollywood stars are increasingly trying riskier genres to attract younger audiences who have grown up watching global sci-fi franchises.
Hollywood Creature Designers Are Also Joining The Film
The film will be directed by Kanishk Varma, who reportedly drew inspiration from survival classics like Alien and Predator while developing the project. Varma explained that the idea behind Samuk came from his fascination with elite security forces and old-school creature horror films that relied heavily on physical effects instead of excessive digital animation. That detail alone might excite hardcore sci-fi fans because practical creature effects have become increasingly rare in modern blockbuster filmmaking.
In fact, the production has already brought in international talent connected to major Hollywood franchise filmmaking. Legendary creature FX designer Alec Gillis has joined the movie to create the alien creature for the film. Gillis is widely respected for his work in practical monster effects and sci-fi creature design, so his involvement gives the project a much more serious genre credibility than people may have expected initially. The action side of the film will meanwhile be handled by British stunt coordinator Luke Tumber, signaling that the makers are aiming for a more international visual scale.
Producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah also said the goal is to push Indian commercial cinema into spaces it has never properly explored before. And honestly, Bollywood has struggled for years to crack large-scale science fiction in a convincing way. While films like Koi… Mil Gaya, Ra.One, and Robot found audiences, fully immersive survival-horror alien stories have mostly been missing from the industry. That’s probably why Samuk feels different already, even at this early stage.
The real challenge, though, will be execution. Indian audiences today compare everything directly with Hollywood spectacles because streaming has made global content easily accessible. So if Samuk truly wants to become India’s defining alien thriller, the visuals, creature work, tension, and atmosphere will all need to feel genuinely cinematic rather than overly stylized. Still, with Akshay Kumar leading the project and an international technical team onboard, the film has already become one of the more unusual Bollywood announcements in recent months.
