The A&M MoCap Lab is a joint venture between actor-producer Akkineni Nagarjuna’s Annapurna Studios and producer Shobu Yarlagadda’s Mihira Visual Labs.
Technology partner? Hollywood’s Animatrik Film Design, whose credits include global blockbusters like Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
That global backing signals one thing: this isn’t experimental. It’s world-class.
Rajamouli’s Big Reveal
During the launch, Rajamouli shared that crucial sequences from his upcoming film Varanasi were already captured using the facility.
The film stars Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Prithviraj Sukumaran, and is expected to be one of India’s most ambitious productions to date.
Rajamouli admitted that during earlier films like Baahubali and Eega, access to such advanced motion capture technology within India would have significantly enhanced the creative process.
Now, that gap is finally closed.

Perhaps most interestingly, the setup is modular and expandable — meaning it can be dismantled and reassembled on location if required.

Annapurna Studios’ CTO C.V. Rao stressed that the lab is not just about flashy visuals.
Directors and cinematographers can now experiment with camera blocking, lens choices, frame rates, and movements in a virtual environment before actual filming begins. That means fewer costly reshoots and more creative precision during principal photography.
For large-scale productions like Varanasi, that level of planning could be invaluable.
A Timely Launch
The unveiling also coincides with Annapurna Studios’ 50th anniversary — marking five decades of filmmaking legacy.
The studio plans to open the facility to Indian and international filmmakers, game developers, and animation studios looking for a production base in Asia.
Notably, this isn’t Rajamouli’s first technological milestone at Annapurna. He previously launched India’s first Dolby cinema processing facility there as well.
