The debate around choreographer Shaik Jani Basha, popularly known as Jani Master, has resurfaced — and this time, it’s centered around his appearance as a judge on a children’s dance reality show.
Jani, who was arrested in 2024 following allegations under the POCSO Act, has returned to television as part of Aata on Zee Telugu. The move has triggered sharp reactions online, especially because the show features minors as contestants.
Why Is The Internet Angry?
Promotional clips for Aata’s Valentine’s Week special — which included Jani and his wife Ayesha — began circulating on social media recently. That’s when criticism intensified.
Several users on X questioned the channel’s decision to bring back a POCSO case accused as a judge on a show involving children. Posts tagging the channel accused it of being insensitive and irresponsible. Some comments were strongly worded, while others questioned how he continues to receive industry opportunities despite ongoing legal proceedings.
The criticism wasn’t limited to Jani alone. The channel and even other judges associated with the show were dragged into the conversation, with some social media users wrongly speculating about production responsibilities and targeting individuals not directly involved in casting decisions.
Revisiting the Case
In September 2024, a 21-year-old assistant choreographer filed a complaint alleging that Jani sexually abused her in 2019 and 2020 when she was a minor working under him. An FIR was registered, and he was booked under sections related to sexual assault, criminal intimidation, and causing hurt under the IPC, along with provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
He was arrested in Goa later that month.
In October 2024, he was granted interim bail to attend the National Film Awards ceremony. However, his award was subsequently revoked. Later that month, he secured regular bail. The case remains under legal consideration.
In November 2025, singer Chinmayi Sripaada mentioned on social media that Jani and his wife were confident of proving their innocence in court.
Industry Silence and Public Divide
The controversy highlights a broader and uncomfortable question for the entertainment industry — how should ongoing legal cases be handled when it comes to public-facing roles, especially in shows involving minors?
While some argue that bail does not equal conviction and that legal processes must be respected, others believe channels should exercise caution in sensitive cases until courts deliver a final verdict.
So far, Zee Telugu has not publicly addressed the backlash.
Final Words
Jani Master’s return to television has reignited a debate that goes beyond one show. It touches on accountability, public perception, and the fine balance between legal rights and social responsibility.
As the case continues in court, the spotlight on his professional engagements is unlikely to fade anytime soon. For now, the controversy surrounding Aata is a reminder that in today’s digital age, public opinion moves as fast as any prime-time promo.
