Ayushmann Khurrana Begins Secret Thriller With YRF, Shooting Underway in Kerala

Ayushmann Khurrana

Something quietly intense is brewing in the Hindi film space, and this time it’s coming from an unexpected combination. Ayushmann Khurrana has begun shooting for a yet-untitled thriller backed by Yash Raj Films and Posham Pa Pictures — marking the first project from their newly announced multi-film collaboration. And from early details, this doesn’t look like just another genre attempt. It feels like a deliberate shift.

The film, produced by Akshaye Widhani, is being described as a gritty, edge-of-the-seat thriller, but the makers are keeping things tightly under wraps. Shooting reportedly began in early April in Kerala, and the plan is to wrap the entire film in a single, uninterrupted schedule by the end of May. That kind of tight timeline usually hints at a focused, high-intensity narrative rather than a sprawling, multi-location story.

Directing the film is Sameer Saxena, best known for his work on Kaala Paani. This will be his first theatrical feature, which adds an interesting layer of curiosity. Moving from long-format storytelling to a tightly packed thriller isn’t always easy, but if handled right, it could bring a fresh perspective to the genre.

From what’s being whispered around, the story revolves around a common man who suddenly finds himself trapped in a nightmare situation. That setup sounds familiar on paper, but the film is being pitched as “genre-bending,” which suggests it might play with structure, tone, or storytelling in a way that breaks away from typical thrillers. The supporting cast reportedly features lesser-known actors, which often helps keep the focus on the narrative rather than star presence.

For Ayushmann, this project feels like a conscious pivot. After a streak of lighter, more comedic roles, he’s stepping back into darker territory — something he’s done effectively in the past but hasn’t explored much recently. It also marks his third collaboration with YRF after Dum Laga Ke Haisha and Meri Pyaari Bindu, making this reunion feel more like an evolution than a repetition.

At the same time, Posham Pa Pictures is stepping deeper into theatrical storytelling after building a strong reputation in the streaming space. With shows like Maamla Legal Hai and Home Shanti, the company has already shown it understands grounded narratives. Translating that sensibility into cinema could be an interesting shift, especially with a thriller at the center.

Meanwhile, YRF continues to juggle a packed slate. Films like Alpha starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari are lined up, alongside other projects featuring new and emerging faces. This new Ayushmann-led film adds another layer to their lineup — something smaller in scale perhaps, but potentially sharper in impact.

Looking ahead, Ayushmann himself has a busy year. He’s set to appear in Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, followed by Udta Teer with Sara Ali Khan, and later Yeh Prem Mol Liya. But this thriller stands out because it feels less like a routine release and more like a creative risk.

Right now, almost everything about the film is being kept secret — and that’s probably the smartest move. For a thriller, curiosity is half the battle. And if the final product manages to match the intrigue it’s building at this stage, this could end up being one of the more interesting surprises in Ayushmann’s filmography.
