After days of uncertainty, actor Rajpal Yadav has finally received relief. The Delhi High Court on Monday granted him bail in the long-running 2018 cheque bounce case, paving the way for his release from Tihar Jail.
The beloved comic actor, known for films like Chup Chup Ke, had been lodged in jail earlier this month after failing to meet payment commitments ordered by the court.
Why Was He Arrested?
The case dates back to a loan dispute linked to his film Ata Pata Laapata. Rajpal had reportedly borrowed ₹5 crore to finance the project. After the film failed commercially, repayment issues began, eventually escalating under the Negotiable Instruments Act.
Over time, penalties and interest reportedly pushed the total liability to nearly ₹9 crore.
Earlier this month, after being termed a repeated defaulter and failing to honour a settlement agreement with Murli Projects Private Limited, the court directed him to surrender. He was taken into custody in early February.
During a previous hearing, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma observed that the actor’s incarceration was not arbitrary but a result of non-compliance with court-approved commitments.
What Changed Now?
Relief came after Rajpal Yadav paid ₹1.5 crore to the complainant — a key condition for temporary bail. The court also noted his niece’s upcoming wedding on February 19 while granting him interim relief.
He will remain out on bail until March 18, when the matter is scheduled for its next hearing.
Bollywood Steps In
The actor’s legal troubles sparked an emotional response across the industry.
Actor Sonu Sood publicly extended support, reportedly offering him work and encouraging producers to provide advance payments.
Reports suggest that stars like Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, and Varun Dhawan were among those who extended financial assistance during this difficult period.
Industry body Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) also urged the film and television community to offer both moral and monetary support.
Final Words
For an actor who has spent decades making audiences laugh, the past few weeks have been anything but light.
The bail order offers temporary relief, but the legal battle is far from over. As the case moves toward its next hearing in March, Rajpal Yadav now gets a chance to step out of custody and address both personal and professional commitments.
For now, it’s a breather — and perhaps the beginning of a comeback chapter.
