A Mumbai court has now restrained popular YouTuber CarryMinati (real name Ajey Nagar) and his team from posting or circulating any defamatory or objectionable content against the producer. The order also directs social media platforms, including Meta, to ensure such content is taken down and not re-uploaded.
The Video That Triggered the Legal Battle
The dispute began after a roast video titled Coffee With Jalan was uploaded on CarryMinati’s YouTube channel. The clip was positioned as a spoof of Johar’s hit celebrity chat show Koffee With Karan.
According to Karan’s plea, the roast crossed the line — using abusive language and directly targeting him while mocking Bollywood’s alleged nepotism culture. The filmmaker argued that the remarks were vulgar and defamatory, damaging his reputation.
Judge Pandurang Bhosale, who heard the matter, observed that “prima facie it appears” defamatory statements and vulgar language were used against the plaintiff. Based on this initial assessment, the court passed an ad-interim injunction.
What the Court Ordered
The court has:
- Restrained CarryMinati, his manager Deepak Char, and associates from posting further defamatory content about Karan Johar.
- Directed social media intermediaries to take down the video URLs.
- Ordered platforms to ensure that no re-uploads or circulation of the same content take place.
Karan’s petition also mentioned that although the original video had been deleted, it had already garnered millions of views. Short clips and reels extracted from the roast were still circulating online, allegedly compounding the reputational harm.
CarryMinati’s Defence
CarryMinati’s legal team argued that the video had already been removed voluntarily. They claimed there was no reason to escalate the issue legally and suggested that Karan filed the suit in haste without allowing the YouTuber to clarify his position.
However, the court sided with precaution, granting the interim relief to prevent further circulation while the matter is examined more closely.
